All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

I would imagine the plywood would not be much different than the old lucite bodies from the '70s.
I have a squire made in roughly the years you inquire about, I had to route the innards to make way for a dragon fire active set with the push pull tone control and the midle tone control works for different types of OD and it is real wood.

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

My favourite guitar has a wood-pulp and resin body. It sounds great and has plenty of sustain. I can't see why a plywood guitar would be inherently bad, provided it's strong enough.

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

i have a 1987 Kramer Striker ST100.... like a cheap Baretta style.... it's plywood and it does not sound that bad... i stoled the bridge off it as it was an Edge trem someone added after the fact and put a trashed 80's Striker era trem back on it that i had... the Dimarzio the last owner added is coming out of it too.... I'm going to fill in the recessed trem up rout that was done to it and add a hardtail bridge and a Bone nut... i may end up using it as a slide guitar... time will tell... but it's not that bad sounding... Even better i got a Dimarzio, an Edge trem, and a guitar for $99... the store even thru in a Dunlop baseball Hat for buying an axe... as well as 10 packs of no name strings for $20.... what a great day that was!!!

anyways long story short is it's not that bad sounding of a guitar... not the greatest but maybe after i turn it into a hardtail it may improve a little

these early 90's MIM Squiers had bodies and necks made exactly like MIM Standards of the day... they just went cheaper on the hardware and the Squier version cost about $100 less then the MIM Standard at the time i bought mine in 1994/95.... The store told me the Squier was made in the same factory with the same woods, poplar bodies and maple necks... the story was Fender was without a contract overseas for Squiers so they made them in Mexico for a few short years

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

well mine sounded nice. i've also heard some positive comments from plywood users. it's not as good as the real wood and quality control from plywood is substandard but you might reconsider the crap you were mentioning.

dude what are you talking about?? do some research first

Sounds nice compared to what? Please explain.

Do you research everything you want to discuss before you discuss it? I wasn't aware of any Japanese Fenders made of plywood.

japan uses a lot of basswood now for sure, but back in the day they used alder, poplar, and yes...plywood, lol. there is such a thing as a cheapo MIJ.

I'm sure somewhere along the line in the cheapest of guitars plywood was used. It's news to me though. I had no idea Japanese Fenders used any plywood. Might be easy to tell ya think? Heavier than alder, sounds nothing like mahogany, could be plywood uh oh!

Yamaha in around 1991 or so used to run adds for their Pac models that showed an overseas Squier's body being sanded down to the plywood... Their sales pitch was basicly they finnished the PAC model in clear finnish so you could see it was real wood for the same price as a Squier.

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

ive seen and played a few pretty decent plywood squiers so im not knocking them. I think a lot of it comes down to the contruction. With a good neck joint and proper bridge installation i think you can make most guitars sound good. Ive see/heard some of these little ghetto cigar box slide guitars that sound amazing, lol. A lot of people think poplar is complete trash too, but it really isnt. Just like alder, you get good and bad pieces of poplar...maybe you get good pieces of plywood, lol.

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

Gotta be a fake! Japanese use mostly basswood because it's readily available in those regions. Never seen a plywood guitar come out of Japan ever. I bet it's a Chinese counterfeit made to look like an MIJ!

We're talking Squier here, Fender have done some pretty shonky things to that brand in the past. I've not seen a fully fledged MIJ Fender made out of ply.

ey Lu_B, did you like how those MIJ squiers sounded and felt? (disregarding the plywood thingy, just feel tone and sound)

One was a total dog, everything about it was just cheap, it sounded horrible and the radius on the neck was totally flat - not strat like at all.

The other 2 were alright I suppose but I have an '84 MIJ Squier with a solid body that is an absolute gem and they never stand up to it in terms of quality and tone, so if i don't love it, its just gotta go:dunno:

Ibanez Talman - they called it "resoncast". Later ones had "proper" wood bodies.

Interestingly they also had fake figuring on the necks - a birdseye effect burnt into the wood.

The whole area under the pickguard is a soundchamber:

It's a lovely guitar. You can just see in the lower picture that it's moulded rather than routed from a block. Most unusual.

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

I've been looking for a guitar to overhaul for my nephew. Something I can make a project out of and get my nephew into a better guitar. My buddy has an older Squier and he owes me a couple of bucks. Essentially I would get the Strat for around 40-50 bucks. It's in very good condition and dates to around 92-93. The decal on the headstock looks like a standard Mexican Strat but there's a small Squier logo on the tip of the headstock. Any way I can tell if this thing is made out of plywood before I tell him that I'll take it?

Thanks!
Are you sure it's not made of plastic ? - If it is, make sure that it' genuine plastic and not imitation !

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

I have a plywood guitar, I may not be very resonant and not loud when played unplug, but plug in it sounds ok, has a unique tone of its own,

I change the pickup to Seymours and It rock out !!!!!,

I think plywood has a unique tone of its own,

what ever wood or electronics in the guitar

If it sounds good to you, I does not matter,

Re: All Fender Squiers made out of plywood?

i was bored, and took the best parts of 2 80's squiers, both plywood, and carefully assembled them into one guitar, and gave it to my brother

he's had a couple of different SD pickups in it, but basically the guitar has a warm mellowness to it, no matter which pickup (or amp). its very pleasant and musical.

unplugged its loud and the body resonates a lot.

its way way better than we were expecting.
