Hi folks, im new to the forum. Ihave a question about distortion effects. Im looking to upgrade from my cheesy pos korg to something that will give me more realistic sound, so my question is, is there a moderatly priced all in one solution that has great sound or am just gonna have to cough up the doe for 6 different pedals, opinions on it would be appreciated.:fingersx:

I like to play heavy stuff like Disturbed, Godsmack, Mushroom Head and old school stuff from Maiden, Metalica, Megedeth.

thnx

WELCOME:beerchug:

It's kind of up there with the debates of single channel amp vs 3 channel switcher.

You can get one that does a lot fairly well or you can get one that does one thing REALLY well.

Make any sense?

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

Totally makes sense. Im leaning towards an all in one solution, any opinions on different brands and/or models?

Im using a epiphone with EMG 81/85 running at 18volts
Peavey XXL into a 4x12 w/Peavey scorpions:smokin:

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

You looking mainly for distortion or something that has a bunch of effects?

For distortion, I hear the Tonebone Hot British can be pretty punishing....I have one coming thru a trade, so I'll let ya' know :D

For a little of everything, it seems the Boss GT-8 or the POD XTL are about the best, but I have no experience with either of them (except for the older kidney POD, which was pretty good).

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I need multi effects, noise gate, tuner also.

A friend recomends a BBE sonic maximizer,
anyone have opinions on those?

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I got tired of the myriad of pedals and cables at my feet, so I sold them all, and got the Boss ME-50, It's pretty cool- has 16 distortions, chorus, delay, reverb, suppressor (gate), compressor, and tone switch-wah, tuner, volume
I does have its limitation- you can't change to order of effects- some effects are good, some are cheesy- if you are using the program mode, you can't make adjustments on the fly. But overall, it suits my needs- I rarely use the program mode- just switch on effects as needed. It's worth the 299 price.

The BBE has nothing to do with multi effects.

It takes your overall sound & kind of evens everything out, cleans it up....think of maybe an intuitive EQ.

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I'm a single pedal per effect type of guy, but the line 6 pedals are pretty sweet.

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

Yes im aware that the BBE isnt a multi effects,:) Im thinking of adding it in to smooth out my overall sound, my tone gets a bit sharp at higher volumes.

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I'm against the BBE if you already have a good sounding amp- IMO they just add noise, and really aren't much more than a hyper-tone control. I don't even use them in PA systems- at 31 band eq can do the same thing, only quieter.

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I prefer single pedals to multi effect board.

I'm sure they don't have some stuff single pedals have

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

Yeah, I've heard both good & bad about the BBE....maybe see if you can try one out or buy it from a place that has a good return policy.

Don't like it? Bring it back:D

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

That Digitech something 13 distortion pedal (forgot the name) anyhow had some nice tones for not being tube. The Hot British is cool but if you're playing live you could only use it for one tone unless you switch it quickly between songs.

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I prefer individual pedals. Usually they do their thing better than an all in one and if I want a different OD for example I switch that pedal out instead of having to dump everything

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I really like individual pedals and a good sounding amp. A good OD, a fuzz, and maybe a distortion of some kind for really heavy stuff. When you kick on a Line 6 Recto or Insane distotrion, it sounds really good for practicing but it doesn't really hold up in a band situation. On the other hand, Zakk uses an OD in front of a JCM800 and whether you like him or not, you can't deny he gets a really heavy sound.

Also, I like being able to kick on and off individual effects (Phase, Vibe, Chorus, Flanger, Delay) but multiFX are much more convinent for a song going from a wet clean verse to dry distorted chorus...

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

Single analog pedals sound, at least to me, a lot better. But if its a matter of money I wouldn't go that route.

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I'm very happy with my Boss GT8. It's not as much a tonesucker as its predecessors, sounds real good, and it's very flexible. You can basically change ALL parameters, including the order of effects in the signal chain, which is something many competitors lack even though Boss already has this feature eversince the GT5 came out, in the early second half of the '90's.
You can also set it up as a set of separate stomp boxes, if you switch to manual mode. In manual mode, you can switch between two amp channels, switch the preamp off, switch an overdrive or distortion on and off, delay on and off, chorus on and off, wah on and off and two modulation effects or compressor/limiter/whatever on and off. In terms of flexibility, it is really only beaten by separate pedals. But you'd need one hell of a bunch!

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I've rather thrown some significant money at this issue, so much so that my opinion may be irrelevant compared to whether or not you want to pay your rent.

For single pedals I like my reissue TS808, Blues Driver, a Boss Chorus, a tuner, and maybe a noise gate. My pedal board blew up, so now it's not so much fun having to plug in a bunch O stuff seperately.

Now that I have the hang of it nothing can compare to a Digitech GNX4 Workstation, although I admit I haven't tried some competitors. Here is a tiny fraction of the features I use :
- Amp modeling - chose from dozens of classics, make your own, or blend any two and save to memory ( save many ); choose cab modeling.
- Effects - again chose from classics, from TS9 to rotating speaker, Flanger, Dive Bomb whammy, assign pedals, mix, match, way too many to name.
- Tuner, metronome, drum machine ( presets or make your own ), add a memory card to record onto Flash, playback, multitrack etc.
- Port into your PC *or* Mac with high quality softare to mix, record direct, and burn.
Yeah, it's kinda pricey ( $400 to $500 ? ), but what would it cost to get all that separately ?

Re: All in one vs. multiple pedals

I'd turn to the digitech gnx series if ya don't want to meddle with (expensive)single pedals. I myself have various od's, distortions and effects(using about 4 pedals simultaneously).
You have to remember that the signal chain eats up treble.I prefer the single pedals better, but thats my taste.

BBEs are great, but if you´ve never used one before I´d get the rest of my signal chgain together first, the BBE is "fine tuning" imo ;)
