Well, I got to try out the combo (in a PRS Custom 22) last night. I was very disapointed. Here are my findings with the pup.
How I generally play - Amp Dirty (Like it's on 11), roll the volume back for cleans, no effects.
Situation 1 - This is at the apartment playing through my Marshall Dual Super Lead. On the clean channel with the volume turned up on the guitar, this pup sounds wonderful! I mean sweet, I had a hard time putting it down, I even liked the bridge clean. Adjust the volume knob and it goes away too quickly. Dirty (very dirty) bridge sounds great, the neck sounds good.
Situation 2 - Church Practice with the DSL. This is at a little louder volume. It was a bit harsh sounding, but it may have just been the playing situation. That's the only way to describe it. It gets muddy when the volume is turned down.
Situation 3 - Blues Jam at Lady Godiva's playing through a blues driver into a tweed bassman. Bridge sounded decent with the volume turned all the way up on the guitar. Cleaned up ok but lost some of the top end. I couldn't use the neck at all. It just got way too muddy when I turned the volume down. This is even with the trebel cap mod.
I think these pickups might be too hot for the way I like to play guitar, because they don't clean up very well. I don't know why they get muddy could be the same reason. I can get a decent sound when the guitar is turned all the way up, but back off and it gets muddy.
I think I'm going back to the Dragon II's. They are bit less in output, but not as little as a Seth Lover. I think PRS must have got it right. I never thought they sounded bad, but I was looking for what was better. Now, I really think they sound way better in this guitar than all the different combo's I've tried (59n, 59b, jb, jazz, jb w/A2, jazz w/A2, CC). It seems the Dragon II's just do the best job of dealing with all the dynamics I throw at it.
Chime in if you have some suggestions.
