alnico 2 vs 3 and 5

hi guys i know this is a subject that has been on here a lot but ive read through and not really found the answer i want .
i have a 08 usa strat that i run into a fender hrd . with only a few pedals 95q wah budda zenman in the front and the chorus and delay through the loop . in my guitar atm is some fender fat 50s that i fitted myself ( i believe newer usa strats came with them already fitted at some point) .

im thinking of taking out the fat 50s and putting in some alnico 2 pickups . how will this change the sound and do you think its a good idea .
see i like lots of styles of music and players but i would say everything from peter green to gilmour as a ruff guide . i think some times the fat 50s sound a little stingy on the drive channel but i can curve that withe the zenman pedal. something i use a lot is the clean channel and i love that single coil sound you get through a fender. ive gotta admit as well ive always like the idea of putting some cs 54 pickups in . i know thats going in the opposite direction to the alnico 2s but on clean channel i recon they would be great.

the point is guys ive never used or even tried alnico 2 pickups so i have no idea what they will really sound like . from what ive read they sound like the right direction but im worried i will lose that classic clean tone i like so much .

also did any famous player ever use alnico 2s in there strats ?

Try some Duncan 5/2's. Best of both worlds.

Yes, the 5-2 Strat. Sorry for the confusion.

these are great sounding pups. keeps the spank on the bottom but softens the top a little.

but those are $150 per pickup! ;)
or did you mean the Five-Two Strat? when I see the #s, I always think of the Custom Shop version. the marketing can seem a little confusing, I suppose.
you mean the 5/2 stack from the custom shop?

incidentally, have you seen THESE?
thats the same concept as the strabro90 but not tapped. and they are doing it the opposite way i like them. i like the alnico rods on the wound strings to keep the clang on the bottom and the screws on the top strings to give em a little p90 girth

Re: alnico 2 vs 3 and 5

almost all fenders have had alnico 5 pups since the beginning. yes there are exceptions but 95% of the fender single coils out there are a5.

Re: alnico 2 vs 3 and 5

I like the look of alnico 2s but don't want them if they are going to change the characteristics of the sound to much. I don't want to loose that strat sound?

Plus I only like true single coils. I've tried stacked and noiseless and just don't like um

Thanks guys I'll check um out

How about famous players who use alnico 2s?

On the humbucker side Slash would be one that is notable.

Here is a link to a youtube video that shows the differences in magnets. Best listened to with some headphones/earbuds. The differences can be subtle, and of course winding and other factors contribute to the final sound.

alnico 2 looks just like alnico 5 :D

The Five Two is my favorite true single coil, period. They should get more attention than they do.

AlNiCo 2 Strat pickups are almost always too dark and mushy for me. The only ones I've ever tried and liked also had a very low wind, such as Lollar Blondes. I've tried a lot of "blues" sets with AlNiCo 2 that are wound to the mid 6k range, and I couldn't tolerate the dull clean tone.
