I got an Alnico 6, and an Alnico 8 magnet in the mail today. I'm going to try these in a JB. The Alnico 6 magnet broke in half. It looks like a clean break. Can I still install this in my JB? What can be done?
Re: Alnico 6 magnet broke in half. Can I still use it?
What ever will keep it from falling apart when you install it in the pickup. I've used super glue on things like this since it's just to hold it in place.
I'd suggest wax potting it to prevent microphonics.

Wax potting? I thought that was only necessary if I have a cover. All of my pickups are open-coil. I'll be follwing the directions from this site; http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/barmagswap.htm
Which only shows wax-potting to be done to the cover (N/A in my case).
I'll be sure to let you know as soon as I try them. I'll be making comparison clips of a JB with Ceramic, Alnico 5(Stock), Alnico 6, and Alnico 8. I'll post them here.
As soon as I glue my Alnico 6 back together, and find out about wax-potting
Ah, I see. Makes sense. So wait,...I just dip the Entire Open-Coiled Pickup into a jar of Wax? Then I should wipe off all visible wax when it dries, correct?
Re: Alnico 6 magnet broke in half. Can I still use it?
You want to use 80% paraffin/20% beeswax, and heat the wax to about 150°F but not much more or the vapors and/or wax itself can burst into flame. If you want to be thorough, soak it until bubbles stop coming out of the pickup.

You can recharge magnets fairly easy by placing them between two larger and stronger magnets. I use two speakers with the poles going N/S N/S. You can tell its polarity with a compass.
