Alnico 8 Results...are IN...

Re: Alnico 8 Results...are IN...

Sooooooo...

I am brand new - long time watcher. This thread is the reason I joined.

I have a PRS Custom with an APH1 Alnico 2 Pro in the neck and a Custom 5 in the bridge. I like the sweet spinge of Alnico 2, but I do not want to lose the CHUNK, and huge, articulate tone of the Custom 5. The Custom Custom sounds like a lead players pickup with all the mids, but I want the dynamics from the treble and upper mids, the bottom, chunk- a lot of balance with a ton of soul. Let my fingers talk. I am not looking for hi fi or overly articulate. I also want an open tone, not a ton of compression. I just hate spike's in any EQ. I am asking for too much, I know, but I firly believe this exsts. Hell, I found the Custom 5, didn't I?

The C5 mids are not as ballsy as I want (yeah, I know this a'int new), but I love that this pickup is responsive and cleans up so well. I love the bass and large sound.

I live in So Cal, so if anyone wants to talk about this brilliant Alnico 8 concept, I would love to chat!

Re: Alnico 8 Results...are IN...

My experience in a Custom was less bass, rounder highs, strong pull on the strings. By saying this: the mids are more present by the pull back of the bass and highs. Definitly nearer the the ceramic Custom than to the C5, but smoother than the Custom.
Yesterday it put the other A8 into my custom made 11k A5 - hard to fit, because the A5 was a little smaller. Fridge test: old DiMarzio A5 had less pull than the custom made pup A5, which had nearly the same as the SD ceramic. By far the most pull had the A8.
