Alnico Classic™ humbucker

I have a epiphone Les Paul custom, silverbusrt limited edition, It was set up by the local guitar wizard, it plays and sounds awesome, Their web site says the pickups are Alnico Classic™ humbucker in the neck position, and the Alnico Classic™ plus humbucker in the bridge pickup. I picked up another epi les paul minus the electronics and want to use the same one mentioned above, but I cant find them listed the way epiphone listed them, are they called by a different name? if your familiar with them is there replacements that are similar, lol ,not your preference, one like i am asking about!

You can usually find these used on eBay for a fairly low price, they're called the same and they are Epiphone versions of the Gibson '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus.

I just pulled mine out a couple weeks ago.. have exact same guitar. They sounded good IMO.. just not the sound I was looking for. That and decided to use that guitar as a guinea pig to practice with. I'm thinking about trying to unload them... or find a cheap guitar to put them in.

Did your p'ups looked like these?

These are known as "Alnico Classic PRO". They came with my ES-339, and for being Asian-made with low-cost components, are quite decent-sounding p'ups .

OTOH, if yours are the 57CH/HOTCH set or the 57CH/57CH set, these are known to be the WORST stock p'ups known to mankind, and can only be used as fancy paperweights. ;)

HTH,

Re: Alnico Classic™ humbucker

Hi i've got the Alnico Classic™ humbucker stock pickups on my epi les paul custom. They sounded quite "weak" when on the dirty channel on my modelling amp. But again i've never tested it on a better amp. I was planning to get a blackstar ht 5, a tube amp. Would that make any difference?

This is an ideal time to get better PU's, like Duncans. If cost is an issue, look for for used ones online, usually for around half price.

Re: Alnico Classic™ humbucker

I've got several Epis that came with those pups (they are not the alnico classic pro models that come on some of Epi's newer guitars).

I thought they sounded ok for the first few months after I got my guitar. When I finally put some Duncans in it, the differences were blatantly obvious...the Duncans sounded so much better in every way that there was essentially no comparison. The new Epis come with their Alnico Pro pups which I hear sound pretty good (I have not tried them myself).

For your other LP, I wouldn't bother trying to find those same pups. Get some used Duncans (Seth Lovers, 59s, Alnico 2 Pros, Pearly Gates, Screamin Demons, etc.). You will be way better off and you can then compare that LP to your LP Custom and see which sounds better. (Be forewarned...you will soon be buying new pups for your LP Custom).

I agree! I wish I had 3 more Lp's and a few more Strats to drop some different combinations... I'd love to try the Slash pickups, a PG set, and maybe even the WLH set, just to see.. or ear.. the differences.

It's what some of us do: look for deals on used guitars (especially local Craig's Lists and pawn shops) for guitars to try new PU's in.

Re: Alnico Classic™ humbucker

The newer "Pro" models are supposed to be made just like vintage PAF's, but I think they have options for coil splitting and such. Supposedly very nice PAF-sounding pickups, the best that Epi has come out with, but I don't think they are sold yet without buying an Epi guitar that has them, though. Most Epi guitars in the last few years have come with really hot pickups, these new ones are more in the vintage vibe.

+ another for "something else" used!!!
:)

Then when you have them side-by-side you can try something else other than teh stockers.

Actually,I'm returning my Epi LPC back to stock for the time being,I'll have a better idea when I get it back.
But they didn't stay in long for a reason,I played 1 show w/it & the tone cap went out(warranty fix),but I had other p/ups around then...
