Alnico II in a JB and Jazz?!?!?!?!

I have a JB/Jazz combo in my PRS custom 22. I don't think I like them. They are bright and glassy to me. I had a pair of 59's in them, I didn't like them for the same reasons. I really think I just don't like the Alnico V magnets. I'm thinking about replacing the mags with the Alnico II magnets. Any reason why I shouldn't?

You might break the pickup. But its highly unlikely if you think about what you are doing and do your research beforehand. Have you read the John Spina tutorial on projectguitar.com??? pretty handy.

How will I break the pickup? I had to flip the JB magnet already just to get it to work with the 5 way rotary.

Edit: Didn't mean to sound like a jerk. I've changed mags a few times, the issue I was concerned about was how will the higher resistance work with the weaker magnet? I didn't know if there were any reasons, these pups don't have a Alnico II version like the custom series.

You'll have the pickups that Jeff Beck used in the Tele-Gib that Seymour Duncan himself made for Jeff.

I bet you will like the results! I have heard clips of the AII JB and it sounded great! As far as a AII in a jazz, it is probally very similar to another Duncan pickup. It will probally sound good as well though! I say do it!

have you tried the jb/jazz with 250k pots yet? it may be a good idea to tame the brightness before changing to a2 mags. fwiw, the jb/jazz was designed to be used with 250k pots.

Bright and glassy? Did you try screwing in the pickup pole screws so that the top of the screw heads is flush with the pickup bobbin? I've noticed that my hotrodded set in my ESP that I screwed down the screws is less bright than the brand new TB-4 JB I got for my Ibanez.

Re: Alnico II in a JB and Jazz?!?!?!?!

I had a JB8 in my superstrat. Its has more mids than the JB, highs about the same and more bass. An improvment but not that far away.
My last tweak was a JB with a thin ceramic (out of a Custom): stiffer and harder highs, even more bass, mids about the same - more to metal lovers

Many claim that the Jazz with a2 is an Alnico II Pro.

Add me to that bandwagon. They both have that bell-like high end and clarity.
