Alnico II magnet in a JB

Whose done it and how'd it sound? I got the JB, but it is a bit to much for the ears. I play Blues, Rock, Screaming Blues and Screaming Rock. The thing is I don't want the guitar to be screaming nonstop. I like dynamics in music. Just wondering if the Alnico II magnet will warm it up a little.

You can try it.

In my experience, it softened the bass, shifted the mid peak to the lower mids, and shaved off some extreme top end. It made for a good lead pickup, but distorted rythms suffered, IMHO.

Oddly enough, a JB with alnico II, and 12 fillister screws turned out to be tighter, sweeter, more detailed, and less compressed than a normal JB.

I guess the poles really do make a big difference.

Logically, It Will Sound As U Like, But U have to try it by urself, it worth a try, and wont take that much time. and by the way JB is one of the best pickups ever.

Turn the gain down?

Re: Alnico II magnet in a JB

It depends in which guitar it's in. If you have a warm guitar and find the JB trebly and screaming, you could try lowering the pickup further from the treble strings to tame the harshness, because AII in a warm guitar has chances to muddy up the bass to mush with gain.

Re: Alnico II magnet in a JB

Be careful with this combo. I have had a A2 in my JB several times. I always ended up degausing the magnet a bit to get some of the mids back out. Try a 250k volume pot, as that's what the JB was designed for.

I just put a 250k pot in today and it is getting real close. Thanks for the info everybody.

So far my favorite high-gain pickup. Driven, powerful, not flubby, not cold. And is not a highs-free pickup like the CC. Didn't play it too much yet, though, too many PAFs getting in the way.

The SD Custom Shop actually has three variants of this, BTW.

Should be more popular.
