Re: Alnico II magnet in a JB???
I have a Gibson 500T, which is slightly similar in wind to the JB, but it had three ceramic magnets. So really, stock, the 500T is like a regular pole Invader, or Distortion type pickup. Probably not that different from the Dirty Fingers for that matter. From what I've heard the 498T is the same pickup, but with an A5, so more of a JB. It sounded pretty JB-ish with an Alnico 5 in it.
The only way I like the pickup is with an Alnico III magnet in it. It softens the aggressive, whiny upper midrange, and decompresses the mids overall. The pickup has lows now, and it's more usable. It's not screaming at you all the time. I imagine the JB with A2 will be very good, and very pleasant to listen to, not so aggressive as a regular A5 JB. I would definitely try it, since you have all the parts sitting there in front of you. The worst thing is you swap them back.
