Alnico II magnet Swap for Ceramic

Crazy Idea:

I have a Dimarzio Steve's Special high output pup with a ceramic magnet. I also have a Duncan APH Alnico Pro II pickup with the Alnico 2 magnet.

What if I swap the magnets, what will each pickup sound like?

Re: Alnico II magnet Swap for Ceramic

not sure how they would sound. the low wind with a ceramic might be ok? the 496r has those qualitys and it makes a very fat pup thats cool to solo on with a good amount of gain.

the ss with the a2 magnet might be really cool for a bridge pup

I find the SS in this guitar to be a bit to loud and "hard" and scooped so maybe the A2 will soften it up.

+1. Try it. I think it should give some nice tones. You know, you can get replacement magnets from Wymore Guitars.com, most for $5. You can really do some experimenting then.

Cool, A5 might be good to try too.

if you think the steve's special is already too scooped, i'd say stay away from a5 as it's a naturally scooped sounding magnet. a2, a3, and a4 would be better choices to put in there.

Re: Alnico II magnet Swap for Ceramic

The SS isn't really a tight pickup I think it would be pretty flubby with an A2.. If it is just for experiment purposes go for it but if were trying to get the SS more full and less thin sounding try an A8. Thats what I have in my SS right now. Gave it a slight sag on the bass end but it's still tight enough for what I do and it gave it more mids and a nice high end roll off. It also gave it some upper mid presence which is nice because it helped a lot with harmonics. Not having the mids in the SS killed me with divebombs but the A8 upper mids made it a little easier.
