The tone chart recommends these and the PG's for bright guitars. I haven't had a guitar with Alnico 2 Pro's in several years but I remember them being typical vintage bright. Is my memory fading or would that be pretty accurate?

Re: Alnico II Pro Humbuckers

I think of most alnico 2 humbuckers as having a smoother tone with smoother treble than most alnico 5 humbuckers. I think the AIIPro falls into that category and that the tone is smoother in the treble with more mids than if it were an alnico 5 humbucker. Lew

The APH is like slipping into a bathtub filled with warm honey, and splashed with the essence of virgins.

Re: Alnico II Pro Humbuckers

I can't speak for the bridge model, but the neck model is pretty smooth and full with good bottom and chimey treble.

In a word: Balanced. :burnout:

Re: Alnico II Pro Humbuckers

The A2Pro is a PAF style pickup and PAF's are a little brighter than most overwound buckers. I have never tried an A2Pro bridge but the neck is very smooth with the typical Alnico II tone...soft bass, and treble with nice strong (but not blaring) mids but I will say this the Alnico II Pro has a nice highend detail that is an almost bell like chimey highend...almost like a single coil but it's far from in your face bright

But you like the PGn better...right?

How would you compare the two?

I mush prefer the Pearly Gates...the PG set is my fav Duncan PAF set.

I have never tried the A2Pro brisge so I'll limit my thought here to the neck pickup only...

The Alnico II Pro has more bottom but the bottom on the PG's is a bit tighter I think...still very much an Alnico II type tone but a little tighter to me, the mids is where the real difference is...the A2Pro is pretty sucked out in the mids while the PG has a mid spike and while that spike is more in the upper mids it really makes the PG sing and cut in a band setting opr under a fair bit of gain. The treble is quite different on these pickups as well...the A2Pro has more true treble I think...the PG often gets called bright but that really the upper mid spike I think most people are hearing...the A2Pro is a very smooth modern PAF style pickup with a little less mids than a true PAF and that nice bell like top end chime almost like a nice Strat pickup (not that teh A2Pro sounds like a Strat pickup but it does have some of that nice chimey high end detail) while the PG is a more midrange slightly less bright, rude/barky PAF style pickup...not that it can't be sweet too but it is far better at that big bass, midrange bark and treble bite like a real PAF with loads of harmonics...harmonics that IMO the A2Pro lacks.

Why would it recommend PG's for bright guitars? PG's are bright pickups even though they are A2. ??????????? The APH's I can sort of understand but, they are warmer and a bit smoother than PG's!

If you look at the details for the PG it does. I really need to tame the highs but I really don't want a high output pup to do it. I may try strapping a 470k resistor accross the volume pot and see if that gets me what I want.

If that darn Brobucker ever gets here the over wind and sunaged mag may be enough as well.

Just too many unknowns right now.

Re: Alnico II Pro Humbuckers

Am i the only person that has the bridge APH?

THe bridge is actually pretty warm, warmer than your average PAF. It might even seem dark in a thick all mahogony guitar. Its got the really smooth highs that dont seem icepicky as PAF's. The neck is brighter than the bridge and has sort of a single coil quality about it.

Re: Alnico II Pro Humbuckers

PRS custom 22. Mahogoany body and neck, maple top, rosewood board w/ trem. This one is much brighter than average for a PRS

Re: Alnico II Pro Humbuckers

my PRS is all mahogany with trem and i am interested in those pickups as well... i think they would suit your maple top... i am not sure about my all mahogany though...
