Meh, I didn't think so. The JB, Custom etc you can dial back the gain and get a good rock tone from them. A2P I didn't think you could get enough gain from them. You can play Rush with a Distortion but I don't think you can play Behemoth with an A2P.

Again, there are a lot of other genres and playing styles, and A2P's are a better fit for many of them than the one's you've mentioned. Not everyone's into using a lot of gain, ruins a lot of otherwise interesting chords. Some of us like to hear guitar work that's more than power chords and palm mutes.

Yes, I understand that. I was talking about MY experience with them, I personally didn't think they were as versatile as something like a Custom because I DO play metal. In a Les Paul they are very good - very good! - for stuff like GNR or The Darkness and anything using less gain than that. I would certainly use them for playing something like Jethro Tull which uses lots of different tones and styles BUT, for ME, versatile means doing high gain as well as something like the Custom or JB.

All I know is the custom and the JB cannot do anything like funk, jazz or surf well if at all. Good pickups though, just not versatile when it comes to the total range of what the pickup can do in terms of styles of music. Again, I can pour gain on any A2P and it shines. More gain than the Darkness or GNR kind of gain too. That's just me though. To each their own.

Yeah, one man's versatile isn't the same as another, we have different parameters. I couldn't play jazz if I tried - I'm not good enough!
I really did love the A2P in my Epi BB, it sounded fantastic for classic rock. Ditto DiMarzio PAFs in the bridge. But they always end up being replaced with JBs or SUper Distortions or the like!

Not hatred. I've just seen so many members complain about it over the years in mahogany, especially LP's. Some of the first posts I read 10 years ago here were about JB's bombing out in mahogany guitars. JB's can work well in any guitar and wood, but have a tendency towards spectacular failures when they don't (which happens occasionally in warm woods. They tend to be much more consistent in brighter woods). Members have written some pretty funny things describing those incidents.

As a blues/classic rock player, I don't think your 3 favorite PU's work at all for what I'm doing, at least not with the stock magnets. I'm not into metal, so I don't see much versatility in them. But, an A2 JB is nice for what I play, as is an UOA5 Custom. Those magnets add a rich, textured sound, making them more vintage and complex.

Actually, it's more by how well something works in a variety of situations.

No, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily versatile either.

I'm quite relieved, as I'd already tried the Jazz (before feeling brave enough to swap mags), and feared I'd get the same messy low end, but came up trumps. The guitar has been a complete mission to find neck pups for, and I'd initially walked passed these thinking they were too close to 490s :-S
