alnico or ceramic?

Re: alnico or ceramic?

Of all these tested, the A8 unit (Alt 8) sounds the worst to me . . . YMMV !

Cause its not in your guitar through your rig. A pickup is only one part of a guitar sound. A magnet is only 1 even smaller part of your overall sound which is why its silly to pick a favorite without specifying everything else first.

I dont understand why people would want to limit their options by picking arbitrary favorites.

Re: alnico or ceramic?

A2 or A4 for bridge, A2 or A3 for neck. A8 if I want it hot. A6 if I'm in the mood for a dark beer. But otherwise...

DIE, CERAMIC, DIE!!! DIE!!! DIE!!!

I think the same thing when I hear sound clips of the alt8. Never played one though.. But the Custom with A8 in it is super awesome. I like that magnet now

The big fat ceramic magnet in the Distortion is what makes that the most awesome pickup for anything heavy and aggressive. love that one too

I want to try a custom with that fat ceramic in it next. For those who have tried it, how does that one compare to the DD?

A2 is really cool if you want a smooth, less aggressive and well rounded tone

A5 is nice in the jazz neck but I dont like it in the 59n. and ive been playing a jackson soloist lately with a JB (A5) that is really nice. only guitar ive played where i really liked the JB

I think it all depends on what ur gonna play. I play metal and a ceramic is a must, at least in the bridge.

Re: alnico or ceramic?

I just don't know exactly what grade magnets are in my favorite pickups, but I know they are alnico, not ceramic. That's not to say I have anything against ceramics. If I wanted something different from my pickups, I'd use them. But I generally prefer an older-style sound as a starting point. More versatile IMO.

IMHO, Alnico in the bridge... I've experienced that ceramic pickups in that position too harsh or powerful for my taste. In the neck it's a different story for some reason. I just use my ear...

Re: alnico or ceramic?

Ceralnico, of course!

okay, for real-

The sounds I like I find with A5 and A2 mags- but I'm dying to try either roughcast A2s or UOA5s.

Re: alnico or ceramic?

Try a double thick ceramic in a sh-5 its awesome!!

I LOOOOVE Ceramic, all Alnico's are great, but just too sweet sounding for Thrash Metal, which what I have been playing since about 1994, the DD. Through I have been around the merri-go-round of pickups, duncans, dimarzios, Bill Lawrence, Tom Holmes, Bare Knuckles, and ALWAYS going back to the DD.

But I would really like to hear a sounclip of the Sh5 with a double thick Ceramic mag through a Marshall..... know of any clips????:fing2:

BOOM! so true, all other magnets don't give that grind and attack that is needed for metal imo.

Thats why since 1995 I have always used the DD bridge and '59 Neck, and I play Thrash Metal. DD kicks ass for metal Rhythm but for smooth neck solos or brllient clean sound with dynamics the neck '59 is just the best out there for the money.... I know that there are better but for more money , cause then it becomes more specialized

Re: alnico or ceramic?

Of all the mags, I just couldn't get along with A4 and A8. UOA5 was great with its mids highs, but I felt it had next to little bass. However UOA5 sounds great in the Custom and Duncan Distortion, these pickups have ample bass. I am now using A2, A5, and kinda coming around to ceramic in one particular pup (but don't tell Blueman335).
