AlNiCo Pro

Re: AlNiCo Pro

But back to my A2 neck, A6 bridge idea. An A2 humbucker in the neck is almost perfect for Jazz already, so no questions there. The A6 bridge pickup would work for Jazz so long as the wind of the humbucker didn't make the bass overbearing, as the pickup's tone would be very mid-focused with smooth treble and rounded bass. As you could probably imagine this would be excellent for clean melodies and the like, but not so much for anything distorted or being able to hear all the individual notes of a chord.

In short, A6s are great for a very particular and uncommon playing style and not much else.

For example for the classic HH setup. Something like a 59 set with A2 in neck and A6 in bridge would work in your opinion for jazz? I mostly have bridge pickups collecting dust.

Re: AlNiCo Pro

Well, I was referring about this one. I'm a little bit confused...

I might not have worded that the best, I meant not to think of the A6 as some new miracle magnet that just now has been birthed into existence. Sometimes we as guitar players think the more unique something is, the better.

It would be worth a shot, you would be heading into uncharted waters though. The only pickups I've tried an A6 in are A2 Pros, Customs, and a few pickups I've wound for myself.

Re: AlNiCo Pro

Really? So using A6 mags for the Amos set was a design mistake?

Please, do explain.

I've got a few A6's, none are currently in guitars now (but were). As has been said, like a warmer slightly lower-output A8. But... in a bright wound bridge PU it could be the right magnet. It's just usually not the first or best choice in most PU's.

Re: AlNiCo Pro

I have an UOA5 in the neck of an A2P. Gives it a bit more high end and clarity, which I like. But I also have an A2P with the stock A2, which is also very good. Depends on the guitar which is best. I wouldn't want to give up the rich texture both of those magnets have, so I haven't tried an A3 or A4 in them.

Re: AlNiCo Pro

If you asked me, I'd describe the inherent tone of an A6 like a less dynamic A2 in steroids.

Now that I think of it, it could go pretty well with an UOA5 in a PAF-ish neck p'up.

Example: UOA5-modded '59n, A6-modded '59b or '59/Custom Hybrid, or a stock APH1n, A6-modded APH1b. I'm pretty sure it'll be like a CC.
