alright amp techs, what's this noise?

Looking for Real Life
alright, i'm running my hot rail tele into the pod xtl on the tubescreamer setting with everything dimed except the tone knob which is rolled back all the way & no amp or anything else on, into an EQ pedal with a big mid hump & the level all the way up, into the bassman with one pre pulled (has 3 total counting the PI) plugged into the first jack on the normal side

master volume - just below 8
normal volume - just below 2
treble - 6.5
middle - 1
bass - dimed
bright switch off
deep switch on
bass channel volume - dimed
bass treble - 1
bass bass - dimed

and it's making ^ that noise, sort of like a swooshy buzz. It's not the pres i have in there cuz i've switched them out & they're still doing that

so what is it? it wasn't making this noise before, that I'm aware of

Re: alright amp techs, what's this noise?

your link didn't work, but some amps just can't handle that much gain pushing into them, particularly older amps that weren't design for a lot of gain to go through them...some stomp boxes (particularly those inside a multi-effects) introduce a LOT of noise when they dirty up the signal that much...

Re: alright amp techs, what's this noise?

Do you run your car engine at full RPM, maxed out all the time? Try backing down some of those "dimed" levels and see if your "noise" goes away.

Otherwise, check your power supply, new wal wart perhaps? Plugging into a new spot in the house? Mom get a new microwave or something? If it wasn't happening, now it's happening, check your surroundings.

Re: alright amp techs, what's this noise?

I had my amp to close to a power outlet one time and couldnt figure out what all the hiss was about.

I looked around and found a hidden power outlet that a fake wall was hiding, moved my amp and it was silent.

My guess is you are running to much gain, on top of some other things, but just turning the gain down will help.

Re: alright amp techs, what's this noise?

nothing can really make that amp able to handle being "dimed out" that much...it's just not designed for it. I think you're better off with an amp designed to handle that kind of thing (particularly noise filters built into the circuit board)... sounds to me like you need a hi gain amp that can do the clean thing if absolutely necessary rather than a clean amp that you're trying to make into a hi gain amp
