i'm impressed by this technique(probably cause i haven't heard it a lot, and cause i suck :laugh2: )

i've searched the net on how to fingertap, but i don't find anything helpful..
i've picked up a thick book about guitars that has a portion on fingertapping, but i can't seem to figure out the tab and notation :yell:

is this correct?
1. with the left hand, press down on the 3rd fret, for ex.
2. with the right hand, tap the fret 12 frets above it. so in this case, it'd be the 15th fret.

i hope that's not all thats involved, because i can't pull it off very well. how do guitarists pull off a blazing solo with this technique? are there hammering and pull-offs involved in this?

please help...

Re: alright..how do you fingertap??

With two-hand tapping, I usually just pick 3 notes that sound good together. I don't know much music theory, as you see :)

use your left hand for the first two notes (or, if you're starting off with the open string, just tap with your left hand for one fret and then right for the other)

The way I do it, I'm not sure if it's the total correct way (I tought myself), is when I'm pulling off with my right hand after hammering on, I kinda pluck it/bend it a little as I'm pulling off to keep the string audible. (careful with strings above the high "e"/1st string, so you dont accidentally pluck them too)

If you're playing 3 actual frets, for example 5, 7 and 12 on the high E, hold down 5 with your left index finger and dont let go, then hammer on 7 with your left ring-finger, and then hammer on 12 with your right index-finger (and then I "sweep" off back to 5), etc.

I've done some 4 note stuff by letting off of the 5th fret (for example) and letting the string ring open, but that's very very hard, and there's not a whole lot of combinations with that.

just remember this one very very important thing!

START OFF SLOW! ARTICULATE EACH NOTE, so when you progress up to faster tapping, you'll have the same clarity.

I used to have a habit of just trying to put the pick in my teeth real fast and then tap.

Don't do that. There's a much easier way. All you do (practice this a little, and you'll pick it up in no time) if take the pick from the pinched position, and slide it into the middle section of your middle finger, and then hold it with that one finger while you tap, and slide it back when you're done.

Wow, I just made that sound complicated. If you understood it, great. if not, then I'll try again.

look at the inside/palm part of your middle finger. the top crease is where the point of the pick will rest, and then the back of the pick will be clinched between the second crease or the actual finger-palm joint (whichever is most comfortable).

Hope this helped!

if you need any more clarification, message me on here or on aim (kydjx)
or find a more articulate source :)

hey, thanks buddy :)

some people suggest that you tap with the middle finger so you have an easier transition with tapping and picking..but since my middle finger isn't that strong..i use my index and use the middle alone to hold the pick..(which i believe is the method you described..) :)

Re: alright..how do you fingertap??

when i 1st learned to tap i learned a great rule. what ever not you pick, count up 3 frets and thats the fret you use your 3rd and 4th finger. then 7 frets from the original note is the note you tap. for example, say you pick the 5th fret then you use the 8th fret for your 3rd and 4th finger and then you tap on the 12th fret. you can also tap on the 13th fret to add some other flavor.

Re: alright..how do you fingertap??

I've just recorded some finger tapping clips and will upload them w/a new thread called FINGER TAPPING PRIMER ...
