Yeah I'm weary of the SH5 cuz a lot of people seem to mag swap and like it a hundred times better, so is there something wrong with the normal pickup? Is there anyone who doesn't like the mag swap? Lol.

Not at all. The magnet swaps are because lots have used the SH5 stock for years and we like to tweak and play around with our tone. We're hobbyists, it's fun. The SH5 stock is a phenomenal pick up.

Haha, that being said the SH5 variation I'm using most right now is with a big ceramic magnet! But try it stock, you won't be dissapointed.

Hehe, I will definitely try it stock one day :) it seems like a really cool pick up.

Re: Alright, I'm sold. SH-6 or SH-5, help plz.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the Sh-5 custom!! It is one of my favorites and I would take it any day over pretty much any pickup. The cool thing is that it's not hard to swap mags and you can get a completely different tone. It takes like 2 minutes to swap mags. The C8 is just a wonderful pickup in itself. Gives you a different voice.. The custom wind is arguably the best wind out there. it takes mag swaps very well. Duncan has 3 production pickups out right now that use the custom but with a different magnet. There are a lot of C8 folks on this board for good reason. It just sounds good. There are also some who like the custom with the big fat ceramic from the DD. I don't know any other pickup that is so widely loves with so many different magnets. It's really hard to make that pickup sound bad. It has something for everyone.

With that said, I think the DD is a good choice for what YOU were wanting. I would have chosen the same thing. Now just get another guitar and throw a custom in it

Haha! thanks. Yeah it took a little bit of deciding and listening to soundclips all night long but I decided on the SH6 for the sound I am going for :) I definitely want to get another 7 string and get an SH5/SH1 combo though :) seems reaaaally nice ^.^ just not sure what i'm gunna get yet... LTD makes a nice looking 7 string Les Paul styled guitar...so maybe.

Big ceramic custom is awesome. I'm getting ready to drop mine in a ec1000

Big ceramic customs, eh? I do want to hear that.

You know i realize that this forum shoves mag swapping down your throat and makes you feel like a leper if you dont do it. Even worse if you dont worship the A8.

But really dude buy a stock pickup I dont care which one. Play the snot out of it. IF! you find the tone lacking then start worrying about other mag possibilities. You will be amazed to find that there are thousands of guitarists happy with the stock mags. Shocking I know but its true. They just arent on the forum preaching 24 hours a day.

i love my alnico 2 pros with stock mags. i'll never take those apart....... BUT i do preach the A8 mag all day long in a custom/FS. what of it? lol

I don't see this forum at all like this. I think people hear what they want. I have been suggested a stock pickup plenty of times and I do the same. The A8 is a very popular mag because it sounds really good

there are a lot of people ON this forum that think the same way. I'm one of them. with that said. I LOVE the A8 mag and I will recommend it when i hear someone preaching that they need a certain sound when I know the A8 will give it to them. I got turned on to the A8 mag by THIS forum and i'm glad i did. I could have been one of those guys who don't frequent this forum and I would never have had the pleasure of the C8, or the hybrids that i've made like the best neck pickup ever..the jazz/59 with an A4.......:33:

Sorry you have a bad experience here and you need to tell everyone about it.

Re: Alright, I'm sold. SH-6 or SH-5, help plz.

I have to be honest, I'm NOT a fan of mag swapping cause the original pick ups design of what ever model has its coils matched with a magnet. Its not like "oh we're gonna design a great ceramic pickup" or whatever, its just a goal for a certain sound, so it ends up being what it is.

Remember, from my point of view, and alot of others like me, Ceramic mag pickups are sharper in attack and direct into a Marshall tyoe amp are just killer. Remeber that in the 80's, when the Sh5 and the Sh6 came out, AMPS didn't have lots gain, lots of BOTTOM or lots of TREBLE like amps of modern day, so NO WONDER that to some of your ears with the modern amps you play, you all say that Sh5 and Sh6 (and the Sh4 JB also) have this "Ice Pick" or Shrill sound. I my self find Alnico a pleasent sound, great for rock or hard rock, but for Thrash Metal into a MARSHALL with NO extra EQ, NO pedals or any help Alnico pickups are too lack luster for me. The Ceramic mags of the SH6 really drive my preamp and have a great chord roar, and are inthe right area between compression and dynamic to play LA and New York styled Thrash Metal. Plus strings.....Dunlop strings sound like caca with my SH6 - all top end no mid guts, but D'Addario XL115 sound killer...

So remember the amp factor and strings, then of course wood, and you will find the pickup that works for you, as I say mag swapping is very dependant on those afore mentione factors. Personally I saty away from mag swapping.

Re: Alright, I'm sold. SH-6 or SH-5, help plz.

oh! I in no way meant to imply that I had a bad experience on the forums or whatever :P I just see mag swapping suggested a lot. It doesn't seem like something I'd want to play around with too much myself, and if I wanted a Custom SH-5 w/alnico8 for 7 string I think I'd order it off the floor from Seymour as a custom or something :)

But for now I just wanted a very stock set that worked for me. I don't feel confident enough or ambitious to mag swap myself. I'm super pumped for the SH6, personally.

And to the post above, I don't use much gain on my amps I prefer a drive from the guitar ;D so I'm very in love with high output ceramics.

++++1 ... Love the sh6 straight into the marshall, thats why I love SD's and not BKP's

Re: Alright, I'm sold. SH-6 or SH-5, help plz.

I have to agree that magnet swapping is overprescribed here. I've recommended it, and I've done it, but it should never be the first recommendation. If you think the Custom 8 isn't a great pickup for metal, especially classic, you're dead wrong. It gives me a slightly heavier old-school Megadeth tone that is exactly what I want. It's got just enough sag to make you realize it's got some type of organic tone, but it's still super tight. Not Duncan Distortion tight, but let's say sophomore girl in college tight.

I think the best way to make pickup recommendations is see what the person is looking for and match a stock pickup to those criteria. I've seen plenty of threads where recommendations start flying before anyone has even asked what type of music, guitar, and amp are involved. If someone says, "The Custom is really close to perfect, but it's just a little sharp on the attack with too much high end," that's when it might be appropriate to mention the Alnico 8.

I think the set of SD humbuckers covers the vast majority of player's needs, but there's once in a while that things need just that extra something, and that's when the tweaking needs to come out. Not before.

Yes, definitely :D I feel like tweaking would be good for some. I have not even spent significant amounts of time with either the SH5 or SH6 to make a judgement call, though ;) I'll soon have an SH-6 in my guitar, so we'll see how that treats me! Should suit my playing style though, from what I've heard and what people say.
