Re: Alternate tone-woods?

The luthier that works out of our shop said one of his buddies made an acoustic out of Oak.. according to him, it sounded awesome.

Re: Alternate tone-woods?

I researched some woods on the internet a while ago, and there was alot of information out there. I seem to remember reading (contrary to what fatty said) That Oak is generally a poor wood for guitars (Although this was for electrics), but it was a long time ago and i could be wrong.

Yea, I never actually heard the guitar.. my info is all based on a second-hand source.

From RampartGuitars.com:

"Red Oak shares many tonal characteristics, with another well known Figured American Wood... Hard Maple. With almost identical properties to maple, this wood can yield some extraordinary Figured Tops."

"The tonal character of white Oak, like that of white Ash, loud and bright. More punchy in the mid range."

Again, from RampartGuitars.com (regarding Cedar):

"More Mellow than Sitka Spruce, ( rounder ) less transparent & less separation. Excellent choice for Chambered Bodies, or to be used as a top in conjunction with a very dense and hard body. ( Think maple body with a mahogany-type sounding top )"
