Alternate tuning and Tremolos

Is it hard to set up alternate tunings on all standard tremolo systems, or just the ones on strats? What I mean mean by hard is that as you are tuning each sequantial string, it seems the other string you just tuned either goes up or down in pitch, thus having to go back through each string until all the strings are tuned properly. It takes a while to fully tune it. Once it is in tune it stays though. I am deciding between a guitar with a stoptail and one with a tremolo right now, and that is one of the main selling points, easy alternate tuning capability (as well as sustain, but that's another story). Any knowledge on this? Thanks.

Re: Alternate tuning and Tremolos

I have 1 of my strats dedicated to drop D tuning. It stays in tune fine although it does require some patience finding the right balance to get it in tune when outting on new strings. After its set up tho, it has no problem staying in tune.

If you have a 1 guitar dedicated to your alternate tuning, I don't see any problems with the trem. If you're using the same guitar for different tunings, I'd recommend getting something with a hardtail.

No, I want a guitar to do several tunings, drop D, E, Eb, open G, etc. So I'm guessing stoptail is the way to go. Thanks.

Yeah, I was just guided through my 1st floyed setup by a forum member, and I tune 1 step down. It was tricky, you have to undertune some of them and over tune the others, (if that makes sense) so when you tune up they all fall into synch. It was a PITA and I wouldn't change tunings on one with a lock nut. not very often at least.

No, I'd definetely go hardtail for what you want. Floyd systems are even harder to sort than Fender ones - I have my Jackson tuned to Eb just now, and if I wanted to change it to E I'd likely have to take the back off and tighten the strings holding the trem in place.
They're not hard to work with as some people might think but for changing tunings it's a no go IMO.
