alternating bass (with thumb) help please

This has held me from learning traditional slide songs for too long. I can't do the alternating thumb bass and that keeps artists like Robert Johnson out of reach. Anyone have a few good starter songs, don't even have to be slide songs, plain fingerpicking would be ok too.
