Looking for a new pickups to replace my EMG 81-85. I need more warmth but still have the ability to cut through with solos like the EMGs- What's the better choice?

Re: Alternative 8 vs Duncan Distortion

I' be had both in my Ibanez RG-120. The Alt8 is definitely warmer than the Distortion.

Oh yeah, the Alt8 has no problem cutting through. It's like a JB on steroids. Plus it has a tight heavy low end to it. The Distortion is great, but a lot more sizzly on the top.

As I said, the Alt8 is warm and clear, the Distortion is sizzly and clear. The Alt8 has more low mids, the Distortion's are higher.

Re: Alternative 8 vs Duncan Distortion

I agree with Demanic. I have the Alt 8 in one LP and a Distortion in another. The Distortion cuts better, but the Alt 8 does a fine job, and when playing without accompaniment, the 8 doesn't pierce my ears. If I had to choose between the two, I think the 8 is the way to go, though I absolutely love the Distortion.

Re: Alternative 8 vs Duncan Distortion

I'm going with the Alt8 in my charvel San dimas. I love the distortion but physically it won't fit in the shallow pickup route cavity. I do have a patb-2 which is my favorite pickup; it has replaced the Distortion which used to be my favorite.

Re: Alternative 8 vs Duncan Distortion

Im thinking of paring it with the pearly gate neck! Is the Alt 8 compatible with that?

Re: Alternative 8 vs Duncan Distortion

The Alt 8 is certainly warmer. You might also look at the Custom, as well.
