Alternative for Custom Custom?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

How about a Custom 5 or a JB? I really wouldn't know what to suggest. What did the tone wizard say?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

JB and Custom.

Dimarzio could also be ok.

How about the Invader or Gibson 500T? James used both in the early days.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

You thought the CC was too sharp, or did it not have enough bass?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Both, was too light sounding so to say.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Man, I've been playing the first three albums' worth of Metallica, and everything From Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry lately, and I gotta tell you that the Custom does it all. It's fantastic.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Nice.

Very nice.

Just for alternatives, what about the Invader/Distortion? Or Dimarzio Tone Zone/Super3? Or Gibson 498T/500T?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Don't know much about DiMarzio or Gibson's stuff, but you could probably pull it off with the Distortion. Don't know that the Invader is the way to go in the LP though. Might be a bit thick. To get the Metallica gallop, you need a good bit of bite.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

How about a EMG81 in the bridge?

Would that be okay and then later getting the 60 in the neck?

Or could that work with the Phat Cat in the bridge.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

No i dont wanna do hybrids.

I will solder the pickups in, i will not begin doing all sorts of weird stuff to them.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

custom. Just get a ceramic magnet and swap the magent out of the CC to make it a custom.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Where can those be gottten in UK/Europe?

Preferable is Germany or DK. And how do i replace it?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

I just tested it, it isnt too little bassy, actually its just on the edge of too bassy. Its more those darn mids i am worried about it, it is them that makes it unpleasant to listen to isnt it?

And lets just say pure early metallica, but with my own tone to it too, would it be distortion, Custom or Invader?

Or should i try a EQ pedal?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

You are looking for a ceramic magnet?
Ask a winder (leosounds, David Barfuss, Rockinger, Häussel are all in Germany and google for their adress) or get a cheap pup from ebay and rip it off.
Maybe somebody on this forum has a leftover? Mine is dwelling in JB actually - sorry!

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

If you think there are too many mids and not enough bass, I would say go with the Custom over the Distortion. If you really want to cut back on mids, try the C5, it doesn't have enough mids IMO, but YMMV.

On the edge of too bassy? Impossible with the CC unless you have the bass cranked on your amp. If that's the case, turn it down. Turn the mids down on your amp to 3 or 4, treble around 5 or 6. The CC will scream with the best of 'em. You want the mids in order to cut through. If it's too much for your taste, go with the Custom. I don't find the CC unpleasant to listen to at all. Everybody who hears my Les Paul with the CC in it goes crazy (in a good way) over how that guitar sounds through my rig.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

I will try it, and i'll return at sunday with answer, but then if it isnt enough it should be the Custom? The Invader is out?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Just swap the magnet with a ceramic, and you'll have a custom. I'm seriously considering doing this with my cc, as I loved the honky sound at first but am starting to grow tired of it and find eq'ing it a little more challenging than other pickups while recording (I just suck at recording though).

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Custom!!

(And if there's too much top end, just use your tone control. The Custom kills in a Les Paul!)
