Alternative for Custom Custom?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Nice. What magnets are in the Epiphone Les PAul Standard pickups?

What makes the Invader not good?

And i havent heard anyones opinion on the EMG 81 perhaps?

Alnico 5 magnets. They're nice pickups actually.

Can't answer your other two questions. Sorry. :)

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Hmm just saw. Alot of people says the Distortion is very good too for early metallica.

Is that also a good alternative?

I am running it through the engl screamer.

Early Metallica? I thought they (Dave Mustain) used JB for early metallica.

The Invader is good if you want balls to the wall metal rhythm parts. If you want sick distortion and you ONLY want to play rhythms, go for it. The Invader lacks clairty of leads and single notes. It also lacks versatiltiy bigtime.

EMG 81, the ones who like it LOVE it, the rest of the people dont get why the others love it. LOL! IMO, its bright, sterile, with no real personality to it.

Epiphone LP standard pickups, I think they are Alnico of some sort. The pickups suck so, does it really matter what magnets are in them?

I've played the passive cousin to the EMG 81 on an Epi Zakk Wylde sig. They're accurate, but to my ear they're too "clinical", i.e. lacking in the slightly inaccurate sound reproduction that sometimes is called TONE.

Some people like the EMG sound, some people don't. Only way to know is go play a set.

As for the Invader, sadly I've never heard much about it and never seen a guitar with them in it. It's sort of sad.

Its a good pickup, It sounds like the Custom may be better for you though. Just get a ceramic magnet and make your CC into a custom.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

I'll try that.

But if it isnt possible to get a cheap magnet in DK, then i think i'll change the bridge for a 81, because i like EMG's very much.

But i am not asking whether or not it is difficult, but can it be done so that the Phatcat can run with the 81.

Lower volume on the cat would be nice, because then i could use that for cleans.

Or should i just go 81/81 or 81/60 right away?

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

I know what you're thinking with the phatcat in the neck for cleans, I like low output neck pickups so you can just quickly switch to that pickup and clean up your sound. However with the 81 to phatcat you're talking about a HUUUGE difference, think about when you go from using your pickup at full volume to rolling the volume back all the way until it's barely goin through at all, thats probably what that will sound like. I'd really recommend the Custom, or even if you have an A5 magnet in your Epi pickup just try taking that out and putting it in the custom custom to see if you like it, it will be a fun experiment, won't ruin either pickup as you can switch back easily and then if you don't like it by all means go with an 81/60 set.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Okay.

Ohh my lord, just heard Slayer, i have a new favorite band next to metallica :D

I have decided to do a complete change to EMG's and save the Duncans if i change taste again.

A combo of metallica and Slayer and in general nice heavy metal/trash metal from the 80's sound.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Hmm i think its gonna be the 60N/81B set i am gonna get, but what do you think?

And where in germany is it cheapest to get the EMG's.?

Musicstore seems quite cheap.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

The custom is a fantastic option just swap magnets in your cc with a ceramic. great aggressive and dynamic tone.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

But the question is, will it be aggressive enough for Trash/Heavy Metal?

I need a tight low end and all, and another problem is that my cable is 6 metres long.

With an amp that can do thrash/heavy metal, yes. Almost any pickup can with the right amp. Some pickups are just tailored more to that style than others. The Custom would be a really good choice to get a tighter bottom end and a big full sound without going over the top.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Okay i just dont know, i like the sound of an EMG81 alot too.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

I'd say a Custom or a Distortion. You're good to go either way.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

Just played with the EQ, 10 on presence and treble was too much, so now it sounds nothing but stunning, but i must say the neck pickup was never all me, i am going back to a humbucker, but which one? It doesent have to be as aggresive as the Custom Custom. I was thinking Jazz or Pearly Gates?

For some nice P.A.F like tones to do some AC/DC.

Hey.

I have gotten the Custom Custom in my Les Paul, and i have always thought it sounded a bit sharp or high pitched so to say, not so much bottom.

when in my JCM900 it aint too bad, but in the ENGL it just shines through.

And as a combo i am beginning to play heavier, and i am very influenced by Metallica, Rammstein, Twisted Sister and others like them.

I like their sound alot, but i would like to keep my Phat cat in the neck.

Which bridge pickup would be good for what i want?

To be more precise:

Metallica: 1983-1986 sound.
Rammstein: Reise, Reise.
Twisted Sister: I Wanna Rock.

Its in a les paul.

I have an Engl Screamer and a CC.

I think it the Screamer which is causing the high end response. It has a naturally pronounced upper midrange. I normally keep the Presence know around 9 o clock and the Treble around 11 o clock.

I have also changed my speaker to Jensen C12n to add more bass and soften the highs.

I hope this helps.

Re: Alternative for Custom Custom?

As i said the problem is solved now, but the neck pickup, a phatcat is a bit too bright and thin for me, so i need a humbucker in there again.

I saw some Rock Am Ring 2006 clips where hetfield uses his Les Paul Custom, i think its a 1973, with the racing stripe and WCC Cross.

Which neck pickup is in it? It sound amazing.

And if i was to change the electronics of the Lester to that of a Gibson Les Paul Custom, what would be needed, how difficult would it be and where could it be gotten?
