ALTERNATIVE HIGH OUTPUT HUMBUCKER FOR THE BROKE MUSICIAN.....

Ok, so here goes. All you Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, Gibson guys are gonna freakin hate this!
But I've found that for SUPER cheap pickups that are high output ceramic units, that don't feed back
at volume, sound good for hard rock/metal, and work well in mahogany guitars.
Buy an Epiphone 700T from a Les Paul Junior! About $20 on Fleabay.
I have 2 or 3 in my guitars, they aren't muddy! They drive the hell out of my Marshall.
And I would say they are ALMOST as bright as my Gibson 498T. Almost.
They don't feedback at stage volume! AND THEY'RE CHEAP!
REALLY CHEAP!
LIKE ME! :wizard:

Well darn, I guess SD, DMZ , et al had me fooled. I will never buy another big box brand pickup again.

Lol. :burnout:
Well, they don't have you fooled. Just deeper in your pocket brother!
The 700T isn't a SD, granted. But for the money I have been QUITE surprised!

Re: ALTERNATIVE HIGH OUTPUT HUMBUCKER FOR THE BROKE MUSICIAN.....

I liked the stock pickups in my Epiphone Special II. They reminded me a little of the Duncan Distortion or the 500T. Kinda rough around the edges, though.

Honestly, $20 sounds a bit high for one like it, though. I gave mine away.

I also really liked the GFS RedActive I used to have some time ago.

Re: ALTERNATIVE HIGH OUTPUT HUMBUCKER FOR THE BROKE MUSICIAN.....

An alternative closer to SD you can get Duncan Designed fairly cheap used.

https://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/product-news/duncan-designed-pickups

The "HB-108 is called the Detonator[emoji769] and is based on the high-output, Seymour Duncan SH-8 Invader."

Then when you have saved enough you can swap for the real thing :)
I have a set of Detonators. Pretty dark sounding, sort of like an invader.
It's actually NOT an invader, " Detonator/Performer/HB-108b is an UNPOTTED distortion with slugs"
The HB108 uses the button head screws, and only one ceramic mag, extra thick! The Distortion is built a bit different, it has the spacer plate for the adjustable screws under one coil.

There's a thread here somewhere with a bunch of info, this is quoted from it:

MOST OF THIS CAME FROM A FORMER SD EMPLOYEE THAT VERIFIED THE INFO
The JB is the same wind as the distortion but A5 vs ceramic. The invader bridge is the same WIND as well but triple ceramic magnets and cap head screws.
The custom, custom custom, custom 5 and full shred bridge are all the same wind and the distortion neck is an underwound custom. Full Shred is not the exact same coil as the Jazz
The jazz neck, alnico 2 pro, full shred and invader neck are all the same winds other than magnets and pole pieces, also the invader neck has a cap across one coil to allow more treble through.
NOTE: Frank Falbo, a former Product VP has confirmed that the Jazz neck and the Full Shred necks are not the same winds. None of the PAF style winds are the same.
Jazz and Alnico II Pro are the same coils, neck and bridge. So a mag swap in either of those transforms them into the other.
Jazz has one slug coil and one screw coil with long fillisters, whereas the the FS has two screw coils with short hexes.
The Duncan Performer Series Detonator is a Duncan Distortion with caps screws. (Does not have a threaded keeper bar under the coil for the pole screws to sit in.)
The shape of the magnetic field, and the inductance shift from a keeper bar vs slugs, for example, it all makes a significant difference. It all makes a difference, really. For example you can take a PAF style construction pickup, and hear very quickly what happens if you cut the 6 poles off flush with the baseplate.
2/12/2018 INFO PULLED FROM SEYMOUR DUNCAN FORUM THE PICKUP LOUNGE
SH-11 Custom Custom in the bridge, alnico 2 magnet, ceramic magnet makes it an SH-5 Custom, and an A5 will turn it into an SH-14 Custom 5.
Custom: Ceramic is Custom, A2 is Custom Custom, A5 is Custom 5, A4 is a Custom 5 with more balance and no mid scoop, UOA5 is tonally half way between an A2 and A5, and the A8 is essentially a louder Custom Custom with three testicles. The UOA5 is the best mag swap for a Custom in my opinion, with the A8 right behind it.

Hey, I said that! It's good to know people are getting their information from a good source.

No secret you can buy cheap pickups; usually the first thing I tear out of my guitars.

Carvin m22sd is another although I don't see as many anymore for dirt-cheap used.

Re: ALTERNATIVE HIGH OUTPUT HUMBUCKER FOR THE BROKE MUSICIAN.....

Hey, if anyone can get the tone out of their heads for cheap, awesome. But I also know people who constantly swap cheap pickups and are never happy.

Re: ALTERNATIVE HIGH OUTPUT HUMBUCKER FOR THE BROKE MUSICIAN.....

I actually like the Ibanez AH1 and AH2 a lot, and they are very low cost.

I couldn't agree more! I've played with a LOT of guys who could NEVER EVER get the tone they wanted. Not sure what the tone really was that they were after.
Change pickups, change pots, sell guitars, buy pedals. One thing they overlooked, even though they had a decent axe and effects, the amp and cab they were using.
EVERYTHING EFFECTS EVERYTHING! Just not enough systematic troubleshooting techniques applied.
But even the guitars/pickups that were stock actually sounded decent. A little playing around with potentiometers, resistors, different wiring, caps etc, there's a LOT of cheap effective ways to get to that sound.

Re: ALTERNATIVE HIGH OUTPUT HUMBUCKER FOR THE BROKE MUSICIAN.....

I've gone expensive to cheap and back again in many of my guitars. My current stable is somewhere in the middle...Pacifica and Epi Les Paul with stock pickups, Washburn Idol and George Lynch Custom Shop with Duncans, a Warmoth strat and Sterling AX40D with DiMarzios, a Jackson Rhoads (and soon to be second strat) with Sounds of Sin pickups, etc.

Whatever works for you!

The rest of your rig is the most important...pickups are just the final seasoning in the tone sauce!

Between this thread and the fact that we seem to back in "EVH" season around here, I feel inclined to post one of my favorite videos...

Mike told me this entire song was done with the stock V8 bridge pickup on his striped Ibanez RG...doesn't get much more inexpensive than that!

Re: ALTERNATIVE HIGH OUTPUT HUMBUCKER FOR THE BROKE MUSICIAN.....

For inexpensive pickups, I'd go GFS, or Epi Alnico Pro's, or even Ibby Infinity 3&4's. Oh, I forgot the designed by Lace humbucker and of course, last but not least Duncan Designed.

See? I guess where I have my biggest problem (among many others we won't mention) is buying things like pickups online without ever ACTUALLY (NO! NOT VIRTUALLY!) seeing, smelling, sometimes tasting, and trying it out before I buy it! These 700T's are just falling out of the sky here in Texas, so I just scoop them up with a shovel and slam them into something. In fact I have a couple jammed in my truck someplace. And I would recommend NOT tasting them if avoidable. Trust me on that one! But really, I've tried them for what I play and what I play through, and they work well and sound good and you would NEVER know they were Epi pu's unless I told you. And I'm gonna tell you they are Gibson pu's. (They kinda are, aren't they?)

SIDE NOTE: People REALLY hate it and cringe every time I tell them I am about to SLAM their $15,000 race engine together and JAM it in their ride.
Be careful where you use the SLAM & JAM terminology!
(I have a patent on the SLAM & JAM EFFECT, which includes the terminology.
And hold a current Industrial Terminology Certification, Class III Specialist B.S.)
