Alternative to Duncan Custom (similar but less "ice-picky")

Re: Alternative to Duncan Custom (similar but less "ice-picky")

I received the Alnico 8 magnet this morning and put it in my Duncan Custom.

After a couple of minutes of playing and recording a short before/after comparison clip I have to admit that this was really good advice. With the Alnico 8 the Custom sounds so much clearer, more open, less harsh and more dynamic than before. Exacly what I was hoping to get.

glad it moved things in the right direction! im not a fan of a8 in paf type winds but in hotter pups like the custom it can sound great

That's great news!

Glad you chose to try the A8 magnet swap.

The "Custom 8" is kind of its own thing among pickups and when it works in a particular guitar, it can really be stellar!

Interesting. It didn't come to my mind before, that a simple change in the guitar's electronics might already do the trick. Will seriously consider that.

Use electronics as one of the elements to dial in the tones you want (along with PU selection, magnets, caps, resistors, etc). On most of my bridge HB's I have two 250K pots. Takes off the harsh high end that annoys me, and the mids become a bigger part of the overall sound. More body and punch. It works for me because I use 9's and a sharp edged pick. With thicker strings & a typical rounded edge pick, it would probably be too dark.
