Alternative to Vintage 30: Governor?

I know the Vintage 30 sounds good, but is a little harsh. I've heard the Governor sounds similar, but a little less harsh. Is this true? Any other Vintage 30 substitutions that would retain the same tonality with less harshness? Thanks.

The Hellatones are aged Celestions for that very reason

Yep, I'm pretty sure the Celestions would get a similar tone over time, but Dave takes all the work out of it for you by breaking them in before they arrive on your doorstep. Great guy, and a great product (I use a Hellatone 30 in my V32 Palomino)!

Re: Alternative to Vintage 30: Governor?

To me the V-30 is more about a specific voicing to an upper mid sound. I personally don't find them sweeter with age. My buddy took his out of his Ampeg 2/12 ( several years on the speakers) because they were all upper mids. In a dark cab I think they can sound decent when mixed with other speakers, but on their own they do very little for me. The Governer does indeed have a darker top, but ultimately I was after a bit more vintage of a voice.

My vintage 30's are old. I bought the amp used original which was made in the mid 90's. So they are broken in, unless aging them inludes something else.

You might cheack out the G12 65 or Eminence Tonespotter, their take on the speaker. Warmer mids with tight response. I have owned both and really liked them.

Re: Alternative to Vintage 30: Governor?

I emailed Eminence with almost this same question. They recommended the Tonker. But I haven't actually ordered it yet.

I personally like the Eminence The Wizard speakers. It mixes the Vintage 30 with a Greenback.

Re: Alternative to Vintage 30: Governor?

at the beginning i epirienced the same with my thunder combo.
it has a v30 built in. after half a year of playin i liked it much more.
so the quest for a new speaker has self terminated. a fatter sounding
tube in v1 did the rest for the perfect engl thunder combo.

i can tell you soon how the gov is compared to the v30, due to i ordered one.
i'm going to build a second cab as extension and didn't want to spend
so much money for the celestion. i was always an eminence fan and am
quite sure, that this baby will perform well.
if not, i will repost here soon.

Re: Alternative to Vintage 30: Governor?

Governors are EQ'd like a V30, but the Eminence (Patriots/Redcoats) speakers are smoother than Celestions. There isn't that uppper mid spike in the Governor.

The Governor is a really nice speaker, a winner in my book.
