Hey guys,
I'd like to share my recent discovery.
As far as cabs goes, I currently have a Marshall SL5 combo 1*12 (MDF, 50*50*25cm approx) and a Peavey 2*12 (poplar 18mm plywood, 71*45*29 cm).
The SL5 comes with a Vintage 30 and the Peavey features 1 Vintage 30 and 1 G12T-75.
Since the SL5 is made of MDF, I quickly decided in my mind that was crap and plugged for the most part into my Peavey cab made of poplar plywood.
The more I played on it and the more I was getting bugged by the Peavey cab because the bass were too boomy, not tight enough and the V30 (I can use each speaker individually in this cab) was lacking "punch" when playing heavy styles of music such as Metal.
Since I plugged again into my MDF combo Marshall speaker enclosure....and believe it or not, call me crazy, but the V30 sounds way better to me into this MDF cab, I mean it sounds "louder", "punchier" and way tighter in the bass, especially when I play palm muted thrash oriented stuffs.
I notice much of this difference for Hi Gain settings like I said. For classic rock, blues or hard rock, the Peavey cab is alright, plus I can convert it as an open back.
Long story short, I was surprised to hear the MDF 1*12 was "better" to my ears on heavy styles than the Poplar plywood 2*12 and I figured maybe a Birch cab would give me the stiffer, "deader" thing I like more about MDF with a little resonance as well that probably will give a better tone overall (yes I don't have any cabs made out of birch so far).
Maybe the Poplar, a lighter wood, is too resonant for me, and maybe that's the cause for some sound dispersation and lack of focus, I don't know.
As I don't want to put the Peavey cab in the trash just yet, and I need to add at least one other kind of speaker, a more vintage one, something from the Greenback family.
Do you think I'd be more pleased with the Peavey cab if I would use it for more vintage applications ? Like swapping the speakers for a Greenback and a G12H30 for exemple ?
That way I could put the G12T-75 in the MDF cab maybe, just for heavy stuffs and put the Vintage 30 into a proper Birch cab.
What do you guys think ?
