Lol, that reminds me that a friend of mine once said:

You don't like Tubes? ....O.K. More tubes left for Me. :D :thanks:

Re: Am I the only one that doesn't like tube distortion?

I don't understand anyone thinking a gainy, squashed (overly compressed) sound equals good tone.

However, I also remember thinking I had the sound of the Gods through a Peavey Backstage Plus with the "distortion" knob dimed. However, I think I've found amps that suit the sound I hear in my head, and it has nothing to do with a pedal in the signal chain.

At this point, pretty much the only thing I use an OD/Dist box for is for leads.

To me, if you can't roll down the volume on the guitar and your level of gain decreases, you're relying too much on an artificial device to produce your gain.

Re: Am I the only one that doesn't like tube distortion?

the other guitarist in my band plays a solid state crate head that sounds like crap to most people, but for some reason the sound it makes totally fits his style of playing, and I couldnt imagine what my band would sound like if the guitar under my leads sounded any different.

Re: Am I the only one that doesn't like tube distortion?

I have not found a distortion pedal that sounds better than my amps gain channel and I've tried about 5 different ones. Tube amps rock!

who said anything about my tone being gainy or Overly compressed?

This thread is turning out quite hillarious to me. I love how many people are gettin an attitude about the fact that I don't have the same opinon as them about what Sounds good To me. Haha, Its quite funny.
I'm not even trying to say you guys don't know what your talking about. If you like your tone, thats radical.

yeah, tube amps do indeed rock. I don't think anyone denys that. Although I'm starting to think some people think I'm a tube hater. But I'm not. I just don't like tube distortion.

what distortion pedals have you tried? 5 isn't really that many ya know.

Seriously? am I the only the one?

I buy amps based on the clean sounds. I almost always end up useing a big muff, or ds-1 anyways. I just don't like tube distortion. Preamp distortion sounds fizzy and lame, and power amp distortion normally sounds flabby and like mushy crap to me.

I know someone will tell me why My opinion is wrong. haha. But still, am I the only one that buys tube amps for the clean sound? and doesn't care about the dirty sound?

You probably like rap and hiphop 2... :foot:

Of course, if you had a good tube amp, you would not be making these comments... :drill:

Haha. No I don't like rap or hiphop. Although I don't even see what that has to do with anything anyways.

And I do Have a good tube amp. And Have owned several at different times. And I'm not saying I hate tube amps or anything, I just don't like tube distortion. I love the sound of a Clean tube amp, just not the dirt a tube gives ya.

You did ask for our opinons. See the title? I personally have not played a distortion pedal or overdirve pedal that I really like. I've never owned one. And if I play my cards right, never will. That is my personal choice, I like the sound of a warm tube amp when overdriven. I hope my opinion is OK on this thread.

Yeah, I did indeed ask for peoples opinions. But that doesn't explain the attitude alotta people have pulled. I mean everyones entitled to they're opinion, but it does seem odd How deffensive alotta people are about this (not you nessicarily). Like little children almost. Its kinda funny, but also a little sad.

Re: Am I the only one that doesn't like tube distortion?

I've only ever owned one all-tube amp (still do). I'm happy with its clean sound, or running a PODxt straight into the power amp via the effect loop return, but always considered its internal preamp's mid-to-high gain sounds totally useless.

I disliked 90% of the OD/DS pedals I've ever heard too, though.

Re: Am I the only one that doesn't like tube distortion?

Most OD and distortion pedals sound small and buzzy to me. I'll just stick to cranking the ol' Bassman. :burnout:

Re: Am I the only one that doesn't like tube distortion?

I love dirt boxes, and I've tried really, really hard to like using them.....

....but, whenever I do use they, they serious kill my tone. The way they generally thin out and compress my tone drives me up a wall. I've come to the conclusion that I'm a strait up amp dirt kinda guy, even though I keep buying dirt boxes because I find them fun to play with.

Re: Am I the only one that doesn't like tube distortion?

I think it is because OD pedals were designed to amke a GOOD overdriven sound whereas tube amps (except High Gain) were designed to AMPLIFY the signal not to be overdriven. That said I love a Cranked VOX sounds smooth and thick but with clarity. But my Pro Junior sounds better with a pedal then when its overdriving although it sounds killer when used overdriven with a Super Overdrive Pedal

Disliking tube distortion leads to bad quality sound, bad quality sound leads to hip hop and hip hop leads you to the dark side.... modelling amps

Edit: Wait a sec... aren't modelling amps are designed to simulate tube amps & their distortion?... hmmm... nevermind
