amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

I got a sl50 about a year or so ago.

Pros= pups are excellent, volume knob taper excellent, tuners are good, neck pocket good, finish nuthin' fancy but that's the point. It's a good sounding guitar and it feels as solid as any guitar I've ever owned.

Cons= Bridge set into body is nice to play but makes string changes a pain as it needs to be raised to allow the ball ends to pass through. But TOM style is easy to raise and lower. At home not so much of a problem but on a gig... Bridge saddles adjust with an odd push/pull set of tiny allen screws so set-up is a pain but to the designs credit, once set I don't see it moving any time soon. Frets were the worst part...mine needed a serious leveling so that set me back another 100. So that put the final price at 330 IIRC.

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

I've been researching these for the past month or so. Honestly, for a bare bones guitar that is still unique, they appear to be an absolutely killer value.

SlyFoxx, that sucks about the frets on yours. I will say that I've only seen one or two other negative comments about the frets and those were usually about the fret ends needing a touch-up. The majority of reviews I've watched and read rate the factory fret job fairly highly on these guitars. Even at $330 OTD, it still seems like a pretty solid value for a guitar that plays and sounds great as you said!

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

I really dig the looks of them (except for the back neck plate.) For a guitar in that price range I would expect the frets to need leveling (all of my MIM Fenders did and they are more expensive new.)

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

I've looked at two locally and both had the strings way off to one side of the fretboard. Not impressed. I did look at a couple of Urban Guitars that were surprisingly good overall guitars.

They are a little, um, rustic, for me, but what a great value. Inexpensive guitars are getting better and better.

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

the one i played was very heavy and the finish on the neck felt cheap, like a daisy rock. but the guy who owned it loved it. i didn't plug it in but i wasn't impressed with the feel.

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

The bridge is awesome. Its got the profile of a tom but the ability to move back and forth like some wraparounds . Well not in that cavity but in a custom application.

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

I'm interested. I like a banged up guitar. Especially if I didn't pay too much for it. Glad Slick is back with Phanom. Throw back to when it was Rocker and not Matlock a bit.

Re: amazing value or not anyone give Slick a go?

Guitar fetish sells them...must be junk as that is what they mostly sell.
From the GF write up, "exact vintage correct plastic cover"...WTH is vintage correct plastic and what could it possibly have to do with the attributes of a guitar?

I'm guessing that they mean the cover shape, not the plastic material, but I don't know what it would be correctly referencing.

That rear cavity cover looks like a Cabronita tele cover.

Haven't played any, but positive reviews across the net seem to be pretty consistent. I keep eyeballing them, but haven't pulled the trigger. If you decide to go for it, I'd be very interested in hearing your review.

Agreed... I've made a couple of purchases from GuitarFetish and been pretty pleased with them, especially for the price.

If that's your take, why'd you start the thread?
Because when I started the thread I didn't know Guitar Fetish was about the only place to buy them. You right though I should have checked the selling side and not just the review side.
My limited experience with Guitar Fetish has been consistently disappointing.

I haven't played one, but it's more electric than acoustic. Looks cool as all get out, but from what I have read, more of a one trick pony.
