American Woman lead tone??

I think I asked this a long time ago. I just listened to the song and it reminded me how much I love that thick and mesmerizing tone. I'm talking about the guess who version. Anyone know of a pedal that would do that sound to a T? It could be something that I could use with a clean setting on my amp or just stack with my distortion pedal to get that over the top tone.

My guess is a fuzz, neck pickup, and tone knob rolled down.

right on man!!! christian saves the day again!
but one problem, theres no chance I'll be able to get my hands on a Herzog. So can you think of anything that will do the same job?
Hell, I might as well write the randy bachman headquarters a letter just for sh1ts and giggles, maybe if he did get the letter, he'd get a kick out of a 15 year old diggin his sound from the 60's! He says in the article that he still has some that he's willing to part with. No harm in asking if I could buy one off him!

Re: American Woman lead tone??

The idea of the Herzog was a small amp (basically a hot-rodded Champ) driven into output-stage distortion, then with a circuit to allow it to drive the input of a bigger amp rather than its own little speaker. Similar to today's multi-stage gain monsters, except that one of the Hertzog's stages was a fat-sounding single-ended output stage.

If you're of a DIY nature, there's a lot of background information about Hertzog-type amps at AX84.com. A lot of the folks over there build small amps, and then "zog" them. Just search the archieves for "zog". I'm planning a 4-position output-impedance selector on my next amp (a low-powered version of the 18 Watter) 4-8-16-ZOG.

Of course, the pedal is a lot easier.
