Amount of tone change...

My classic 30 isn't "sparkly" enough on the clean channel. I've been tweaking it for a while, and this is all that is holding me back from keeping it. I've emailed bob at eurotubes and told him what I want, and he emailed me back with his diagnosis.

Here's my question, how much can new JJ tubes, a new speaker, and new pups change my tone? Will it be a drastic change? If so I can stick with my Classic 30 until I can mod it to my specifications. If not, I'll be checking out a Blues Junior for that sparkly clean (does it have it?)

My only worry with the Blues Junior is that it might not be loud enough to jam with.

it will still maintain some of the characteristics of your orginal tone but will just be a whole lot better.

new tubes, new speaker, and new pups will have a very big influence on your tone. it all depends on which of what you get. know what i mean? to get more sparkly cleans, i dont think that a new speaker will give you better cleans, but it will alter your overall tone. new pups will probably help you out, depending on what you get. and i really cant help you on the tubes, i dont know much about those. ill leave that to one of the real experts around here.

I like it's characteristics, it's real bluesy. I just want to add some more punch (hence the APS-2/twanger banger pups) and a sparkly SRV-ish clean.

i have some fralin vintage hots in my strat and they are really sparkly clean sounding heck they even sound fantastic through my little pignose portable amp

It can make a huge difference. In addition to pickups, speaker, and tubes, have a look at www.blueguitar.org. They have some Classic 30 mods which can give you that sparkle you seek. I modded my Classic 50 to Blueguitar specs and I'm very happy with the results.

How hard are these mods? I really know nothing about circuitry, and am just learning to solder.

In that case, you'd need to have a tech do the mods. They're not hard, but tube amps have current lurking inside, even when turned off. If you go poking around inside without properly discharging the amp, you could be killed or severely hurt.

The tube change to JJs is sweet, but probably not going to satisfy you. The speaker change can change the voice of the tone quite a bit. Changing pickups can greatly alter the tone coming from your guitar, but won't have a great affect on the characteristics of the amp. The C30 benefits greatly by adding an extension cabinet. You might try that.

I don't know anything about the Blues Junior, but can tell you that I like the C30 better than I liked my Fender Hot Rod DeVille 2x12. The overdrive channel of the PV smokes the Fender's, and it also reacts better to pedals. Plus, the HR DeVille was way too much amp for anything I'd use it for, including live performances. Maybe the Blues Jr. is the ticket for ya!

You might also look at the Peavey Delta Blues 1x15. I recently played out of a Peavey Delta Blues, basically the same amp as the C30, but with a 15" speaker. I preferred the sound of the Delta, as it had a more open, chimey tone to it. Not as stuffy/mid-heavey as the Classic 30.

Yea I was considering the Delta Blues 210 before I decided on the Classic 30. I discovered that they are essentially the same amps, except for the exterior/number of speakers, and the fact that the delta has a tremolo.

I might have to go try one out again!
