Re: Amp Advice for Parents?

I think the modeler route will offer insight as what kind of sound they are looking for rather than trial and error with expensive tube amp. Later when things progress.... so what the amp.... or perhaps by then modeling will have evolved where tubes are no longer necessary. Thing is with modelers being used a lot in modern recording... the younger generation may actually dig that sound better than tubes..... just a scary thought.

Re: Amp Advice for Parents?

I think if I had a Line6 Spider when I was an 111 year, I would have spent more time worrying about how to develop technique and style rather then spending time trying to figure out why my sound straight into a clean amp was so different than Kiss and Judas Priest.

Another vote for The Superchamp XD.

I would have creamed myself for one of these when I was 13.

Re: Amp Advice for Parents?

I'd say modeller too, but I'd suggest a bit more oomph. You need more specified power from a modeller or solid state amp to keep up with a drummer than you do from a valve amp (and no, it's not because valve watts are louder ;) )

+11. If you're going to get a modeler, get the loudest one with the most headroom. Luckily with modelers, you don't need to worry about low volume tone, like you do with tube amps. But when you get into a rehearsal room, you want to be able to bring it up to tube amp levels. So the modelers that are 100 - 300W will have more size to the tone with less SS hiss/hum.

I really like the Valvetronix amps because they tend to have more of a tube feel under the fingers.

Pocket Pod's amazing. It's my second-favorite battery-powered thing that I own.

Re: Amp Advice for Parents?

a peavey vypyr or a line6 spider III(or IV if those are out yet..) will definitely cut it. and it is MUCH better than the amp I learned on. which was a rocktron 10 watt amp that was bought for me at a pawn shop for like 30 bucks...

and then later they can make the jump to tubes, or they can keep on playing modelling amps if they wish!

to be totally honest. the line6 vetta II I played can keep up with any tube amp as far as tone goes. no it's not 100% tube like. but it has great tone for the kind of versatility you're getting out of it.

I have no bad words to say about modelling, although I have to say the bugera I had was a really good amp and I love tube amps, but i'm not a snob about it. i love a good solid state amp.. I love a good modelling amp and I love a good tube amp. :)
