Amp advice!

Hey guys!

So Im starting a journey to buy me an amp ...

Here's what I play ... mostly Pop/Pop Country/R&B, looking for something thats going to be a solid clean tone for me. Here's the kicker ... my budget is $1500 tops ... So

Im thinking of a few options

DRZ Carmen Ghia and use the speaker from my Hot Rod Deluxe as the cab (till I can afford one). The plus of this ... is if there are gigs where I need more clean head room ... I could just take the Deluxe as opposed to the Carmen Ghia.

Also ... Fuchs is modding amps now ... So I was also thinking about having them mod my Hot Rod to ODS spec's ...

Thoughts? Suggestions? Has to be tube! Preferably one channel ... or two channel with great clean tone ... effects loop not a must.

Re: Amp advice!

Something tells me a roland combo style amp may suit your needs nicely. I know they make some beauty solid state ones. Maybe tubed models exist. I'm not sure. Behringer may be worth checking out. They make stuff that can sound good but is cheaply made. Roland though is a good company.

Re: Amp advice!

First of all, if you're looking to spend good money on an amp with stellar cleans, find one with a stellar reverb as well.

You also should demo a lot of amps to pinpoint the tube type you like the most. 6L6 will give you big high headroom glassy lows and highs. EL-34's will give you nice breakup, big tone, and complex mids, 6V6's will give you sweet cleans and a rude breakup, as well as full bodied chime, and EL-84's will give you glassy chimey crunch and clean tone with a lot of mids and highs.

Spending some weekends hitting all the good music stores which stock great amps will instantly open your eyes as to what it is you really want. Once you're at that point, your ears will determine how fast your money comes out.

Re: Amp advice!

Good call joneser ... i've been playing 6l6's for a long time now ... looking to try some different, warmer sounding stuff ... so Im leaning towards some EL type amps ... not too sure yet though. Definitely needs to be tube though ... thats a must

Re: Amp advice!

what gearjoneser said.:) you might be able to find what you're looking for in a vox ac50. it's an el34 amp(i think it's only a head now) with clean and distorted channels but from what i understand the clean channel is supposed to be voiced on the chimey side, but it's still got that warm el34 flavor to it.
