Amp distortion vs Pedals...

Re: Amp distortion vs Pedals...

I think it really depends on the player, the axe, the kind of music wishing to be delivered, & probably most importantly, the song itself.

It almost sounds like you want two amps & a switcher to achieve your live needs. One amp set to your overdrive sound & the other clean (you could stick a gain pedal infront of your clean amp too & kick that second amp in for solos to get that much wanted db boost we always seem to want in a solo).

For the overdrive needs, if you play with heavier gain on the amp, then pedals will more often than not, make it get squishy & less dynamic.

One user mentioned the Klon which are pretty fantastic. Lately I've enjoyed using my Visual Sound Jeckyll & Hyde or my Fulltone OCD. But it really depends on how much gain your using in your amp to start with.

Live, I like to use a good crunch tone from the amp & then usually some kind of pedal for added gain options. In the studio I ALMOST always go for str8 amp tone, or maybe a treble booster into the low gain input. I say ALMOST, cuz it depends on the song ultimately & what IT wants.

Clean boost or Treble boosters are great too, but might I suggest if you use one, try going into the low-gain input of your amp. It worked wonders for Brian May, Peter Green & Cream era Clapton. A 20-30db clean boost into the high gain input will probably be just too fizzy.

again, I hate to keep saying, "it all depends" but it really does. If your playing dethmetal, than I think either some great new highgain/clean two-channel amp alone would work...or some good quality overdrive unit into a loud clean amp might be an option.... have you ever heard a Boss MZ into an old Silvertone amp (White Stripes amp)? It could hardly get more metal for recording that kind of stuff.

If your more into Page, Hendrix, May, Clapton, etc.. try out the treble-booster into the low-gain idea & just use your guitars' volume knob to clean it up when needed.

If you want a fuzz sound, u need a fuzz pedal & experiment with both the amp & the pedal to coax the sound you want.

I hope I didn't confuse this issue for you even more. :outahere:

Re: Amp distortion vs Pedals...

Yeah... It's for bedroom pretty much so I probably won't even notice hehe... Thanks for all the input! Here's the plan so far:

Pedalboard:
Big Muff (for OD tone)
Small Stones Phaser
Route 66 OD/Compressor (OD set for boost)
Line 6 Uber Metal for Uber metal (...)
Some kind of Marshall emulation

Loads of drive... all of this into the clean channel. And since it's a Laney AOR it also has a footswitcheable gain stage I can kick in for a pretty enjoyable crush. So I'd have clean, crunch with boost, crunch with amp boost, amp boost boosted (:D), uber metal, Marshall like rythm tone and the muff for old bluesy stuff and ZZ top like boogies.

Re: Amp distortion vs Pedals...

Guitar->Amp->Speakers for me. My amps have always had plenty of gain so I never felt the need to use pedals.

Re: Amp distortion vs Pedals...

both.

amp set to mild overdrive, then boost.
i dont like distortion pedals.
