Amp GAS...

Empty Pockets

Weeeell my amp is nice but it seems a little too "vintagey" for me (maybe that's because it's almost as old as my father). So I'm thinkin of compiling a couple paychecks and gettin a fresh one.

What do you guys recommend? A wise old guitarist once told me to get an amp with a good clean sound, 'cuz you can always get distortion with pedals. So I'm thinkin, what's cleaner than a Fender Twin? :D

So do you think I should get the Twin and a decent set of effect pedals? Maybe something that'll offer good cleans and distortion without having a chain of pedals before the amp? I'm open for suggestions...

Re: Amp GAS...

A Twin works nicely with a G2D Custom Overdrive in front of it. At least mine does. It gives you a solo channel as well as a rhythm channel too. With a single channel Twin like mine this pedal is really the cat's pyjamas.

Re: Amp GAS...

There are lots of great tube amps with great clean sounds. A twin would be a great place to start, as would other fenders (twin reverb, hot rod deville, etc.). But since you already have a bassman and seem to be looking for other sounds, I would also look at peavey classics and riveras (the KH100 knucklehead is my personal choice).

As to whether you want to use pedals for distortion, I've done that for a long time with fenders and riveras and it has suited me just fine. When I'm in a situation that needs cleans, I look for that first and then find a pedal to give me my distortion. However, the riveras also give you a marshall-type channel, and you might like it depending on your tastes.

I'd say what everyone else does, though. Try out a bunch of gear, and then buy what speaks to you. Even if you play something in a music store and then buy the same thing off ebay, it's better than just buying something that you have no idea what it is. Besides, it's fun to try out a lot of different gear, especially amps. Good luck!

Re: Amp GAS...

Yeah what tones are you looking for, cos although pedals through tube clean channels are good, nothing beats a head with a good swag of genuine creamy tube gain if thats what you want. I was just jamming on my halfstack and i tell you, it sounds sooooo nice!

You should try out all the different options before you commit. eg. Try out a nice clean twin with some pedals and compare it to an amp with a great distortion channel to see what you like better. There are a lot of different types of distortion too, depends on what you're looking for.

Re: Amp GAS...

Well I kind of want a wide range of tones, so I'm thinking an overdrive pedal chained with a metal distortion pedal, giving me the ability to blend the two and all that jazz...I like a good clean-sounding guitar just as much as I like a rediculously hi-gain, thrashy hardcore guitar...

I'll go from listening to a band like Modest Mouse to Curl Up and Die to Operation Ivy without blinking, and my playing style kind of echos that change-of-pace stuff...
