Amp Gurus, need advice on OT selection

howdy,
i know this isn't an amp dedicated forum, but i know there are some
gurus in here, of which i'd like to know the opinion of ..:bowdown:

i'm building a bassman top on my own. my issue is, that i wouldn't
be really happy with a 2 Ohms out, therefore i need another OT.
would it change the sound significant if i'd choose an JTM45-Ot, or
an Hammond 1650N ?
any better solutions for at least an OT with 8+16ohms out?

blackface bassman?

mercury magnetics makes a FBFBM-OM that is a blackface bassman ot with 4,8, and 16 ohm taps

hmm, i've never seen a shop for mercury magnetics on my isle - i'll check,

what do you think about the OT's i mentioned?

hammond makes good stuff as far as i know, i only have experience with the older ones but they were all good iron.

a jtm 45 tranny should work fine too. mercury magnetics makes the best trannys i know of but they arent cheap

The MM stuff is nice but most of it is overpriced IMO...if I were gonna do a tweed Bassman head and wanted more than just a 2 ohm tap I would check with Heybore and see what they have.

Allen Amps has a few multitaps that would be suitable...Weber and AES both have a 50 watt multitap (2, 4, 8)...the Hammond is a great OT, but may be a little cleaner and more hifi than you would want in a 5F6A.

mm has a great reputation. but for that price and shipping costs to my
location, i want to check any good alternative.

what could be the issue with a hammond? 'too much' headroom eg?

i haven't heard about Heybore or Allen before - great, i'll check out what they provide

/edit: the Allen TO40MT seems to be a very nice and cheap alternative.
i couldn't figure out a Heybore site so far

Hey, before you stress the web... you're looking for a "Heyboer". I built a little Champ-like amp, and used a Hammond OT. Very good products.

If the specs are good for your needs (primary impedance & power, DC budget) then I'm sure it would serve you well. I think the concern with "Hi-Fi" is such that most classic amps of old sported OT's that didn't deal with frequencies above say 8K. Those hammonds will. Some argue that this extended bandwidth will be too harmonically rich? But i think a cap will filter all those out?

Well, you might not want a Hammond in a 5E3 clone, for instance. Ditto for most tweed designs...big headroom and extended bandwidth is not characteristic of tweed amps. Might sound good, might not...

---just noticed you are looking for 16 out---not a common secondary on Fender style iron, although the Tonemaster or Prosonic OT's have a 16 ohm tap (Angela has them).

4 or 16 would be good to have also, so i can connect a second cab,
it doesn't have to be 16

Lots of great choices out there. My only real advice is to stick with a US-made trannie. The QC seems to be a lot better.

I'm late to this party, but you really can't go wrong with a Mercury Magnetics transformer. Their not cheap, but I feel the quality is worth it.

As much as I like the MM, I'd go for the Hammond if it's that much cheaper. Hammond is certainly a quality transformer.
