Amp idea

Re: Amp idea

For me (and many, I'd wager) the real attraction of the DRs is the ability for it to get really nasty at (fairly)low volumes..

from a purely objective mode of thought/standpoint...what would be the advantage of a higher wattage version, Scott?

Re: Amp idea

I think a boogie MKI type of distortion with a dumble tone section and EL84 power at 15 watts would be cool in an open back 2x12 with celestion greenbacks.

Re: Amp idea

I'd have to say NO ! The beauty of 6V6s to me is you can get them to breakup without blowing the room out. And it's rare you have to hear those dreaded 3 words <TURN THAT DOWN>:smack:  If I need the fire power, I'd rather have a Dual 6L6 amp. Besides... A Matched Quad of good 6V6's is pricey.:13:

Re: Amp idea

It's not a bad setup. The only amp I played like that was the Carr Slant 6V, and it sounded like a bigger tighter Deluxe Reverb.

How about making a low powered Tweed Twin clone, in both 1-12 and 2-12.
Maybe even try one with a master volume, so you can control the gain and level? I've always thought there'd be a market for a 40W Tweed Twin with master volume and 2 inputs.

. . . now that got my attention !

Re: Amp idea

I played an amp a few years ago that was a single channel DR (it was built w/o the dry channel) that was built with the option of running 2 6L6's or 4 6V6's...it was cool but I would never buy one...

Re: Amp idea

How about 2x6V6 and 2xEL84 in the same amp? Doesn't carr do one like that? Make it switchable? one set or the other or both? That'd be a tweakers delight.

Re: Amp idea

You would still have that nice round 6V6 tone, even in a 4-holer. I always liked the idea and use a Vicky DD on occasion---but it would be nice to try a fixed bias/long tail PI version as well that was BF voiced and had internal reverb. So...maybe a cathode/fixed bias option ???

Re: Amp idea

id actually love to hear a cathode bias/long tail pi, four 6v6, bf deluxe reverb. especially if there was a foot switchable neg feedback defeat for a solo boost

Re: Amp idea

I have thought of having a 70's twin modded to similar specs (reduced to 6V6 x4). Of course, the left channel would be modded to a more "british" sound. I have a twin right now that black face on the right and "marshall" on the left. The reverb is global, effecting both sides. I can "jump" the channels like an old marshall and blend the channels for interesting sounds. My biggest problem with it is the volume. It can be insanely loud. The 6v6, el84 thing sounds cool though. I like tweaking, so I am not a good one for market analysis, I like almost anything.
