Amp is fixed and retubed...amazing!

If you guys remember, i had posted a thread about my amp giving me weird problems. Well at first it sounded like the power tubes were gone so i ordered the blues jnr max headroom kit from eurotubes. After install, same problem, almost no volume.

I arranged to have my amp fixed by Bill Machrone (Bill M of the Bill M mods) since we both live in jersey but i had to pull out since i really couldnt afford to have it fixed by any1. Nothing to do with Bill, his prices were actually better than anyplace else i investigated.

So i got to taking it apart an tinkering. Id installed a couple of the Bill M mods a while ago, including a presence control. This included adding a new pot. By shear luck, i noticed the one or more of the lugs on the pot seemed to be bent and were touching the metal chasis. I bent them back a little and there you go.

Anyways, since ive been selling off all my pedals to help fund the furnishing of a new apt...i plugged directly into my amp for the 1st time in years.

Holy cow!!! :friday: I dont know how much of it is the new tubes and how much is just straight into the amp, but i had forgotten how darn good a cranked blues jnr sounds!

Once i move in and get settled ill build some kind of OD clone just to push the amp over the edge but right now i am loving playing with the volume and master set so that its loud and near to the edge. Truly great sound.

I'm glad to hear that man --- what does a cranked Blues Junior sound like?

Re: Amp is fixed and retubed...amazing!

I was playing through it with a strat and it has that classic fender sound. I had the treble and bass cranked to 12, the volume on about 7 and the master around 6 and it was that really thick syrupy SRV strat sound. Sexy as hell. A lot of people told me the JJ preamp tubes were harsh but im not hearing any of it.

SWEET MAN!!!

glad you're digging it!!!

Re: Amp is fixed and retubed...amazing!

It's a mix of so many things.
Similar to how when you play after a while it seems like you're not making progress so you take a break. Then after that break you realize you just got better.

A break away from something can sometimes really bring the life out (or back into) something.

That woulda been a shame to have been charged to bent some tabs. Good deal, man!

Yeah JJ's aren't harsh, they just have a little mid hump...

I think Scottish is using the ECC81s . . . which should be fine. the JJ803 long plate sounds ok too and it has a very noticeable mid-hump but it's very warm-sounding. just doesn't like combo amps very much.

Re: Amp is fixed and retubed...amazing!

Im using a matched pair of EL84's in a cooler grade, a balanced ECCC83S for the phase inverter in V3 and two ECC81's to replace the 12AX7's in V1 and V2.

thats ripped right from the eurotubes website
