amp kit update, and a question about capacitors

so i got my p1 extreme kit in the mail earlier this week, which is why i haven't been on the board here so much lately, haha.

it seems to be coming along well...haven't ran into too much trouble so far. here's where i'm at:

everything's mounted on the chassis, and the circuit board is all wired up. everything else just needs to be wired up to the board, then hopefully it'll be ready to jam, and hopefully i haven't screwed anything up!!

one thing i want to make sure i'm clear on is the polarity on the filter caps...

is the end that has the arrows pointing toward it the positive end or the negative end?

Re: amp kit update, and a question about capacitors

The little dash in the stripe is a negative sign and it points to the negative end of the cap.
And, almost all modern electrolytic caps have a gasket on the positive end with the + lead wire coming out the gasket.

thanks, thats what i thought, but i figured i'd be better safe than sorry so i wouldn't wreck anything.

muttonchopsrule...are you into exchanging some PM's or emails about building tube amps?

I'm working on a Champ clone, sourcing the parts from scratch. So far, it is painfully slow as I have limited time to work on it ( spending too much time on this forum is one reason).

Just wondered if you are interested.

Thanks

Dave

totally. feel free to hit me up whenever you want. i'm by no means the most knowledgable person when it comes to building amps (i'm just following the schematic, haha). but yeah, like i said, feel free to PM me.

Hey Mutton, you've streaked ahead. Looking good. Have you done your scary first power-up?

I'm lagging a bit on my P1, i had a hard time sourcing the parts (a kit was not an option out this way)

I got an old gorrilla amp, and canabalised it for a chassis and combo-cab. Much drilling, cutting etc.

Used a bare plank for component mounting...
Could only get red wire, so heck, if i have to fault find!

Lemme know when it's rockin...

i did the scary first power up yesterday, and i got mix results out of it so far. i've still got a lot of bugs to work out. at first, i wasn't getting any sound, and after going over everything in the entire circuit about 5 times, i realized that i scred something up with the variable bias circuit, so i took that out for now. now i've got sound, but i think i've got somebad solder joints somewhere. today i'm gonna remove the eyelet board and put all the jumpers on the top of the board (it was stupid to put them on the bottom :smack: ) so if something isn't connected well i'll be able to see it.

it's coming along though, and it's been a lot of fun!

Hey More Gear......

So cool to hear about your amp build!

I could get (small) parts for you if you having problems. I'm sourcing my own stuff also, but there are several electronic parts suppliers quite near to my place.

I'm way behind both you guys with my amp project.

Mutton:

Glad to hear that the first power up was quite successful.
I'm expecting to have to a lot of troubleshooting....but that is a long way off from now.

Hope maybe some othe amp builders will make a comment.

Dave

PS Where are you located?

Im out in South Africa. Thanks for the offer to help get some bits. I luckily have managed to get pretty much everything. But i telly you, the biggest job/hassle has been the chassis drilling etc. A kit looks like a great saver. And just when i'm all ready to have a long nights progression, oops, i dont have this size nut, or that bolt, or i forgot to drill a hole for... Plus i have no kitted out workshop. I have a spare room and a screwdriver and wrench! And all my wire is red!. And i made all the connections/jumpers under my board (silly). Ampmaker.com is a great help, cause he breaks it down to the basics, with idiot proof pics. (which i'm cribbing off of)

I will post pics, and if it ever happens, sounds!
