Amp modeler choice (again)?

Re: Amp modeler choice (again)?

OK, I found it.

Here it is:

www.bill-lima.com

This is what made me buy the Behringer...listening to Bill's clips. I also e-mailed him a bunch of times and he was very cool.

Check it out, he made all his clips with a V-Amp 2.

Trust me....I tried both positions....spent a solid month fighting with the thing until I unloaded it on the 'bay.

I trust you. :) The "J" definitely had its share of software problems. Thats probably why they quit making it. But when it worked . . . it worked great. (Knock on wood.) ;)

Is that all v-amp2? In his gear list, he mentions the podxt only?

Anyways, tried out the zoom g2 and didn't like that at all. Couldn't try the pod2 or podxt b/c the salesperson didn't have a floor model available and didn't want to open a new one up if i wasn't going to buy it on the spot. Oh well - i guess that's understandable. Also understandable if i spend my money elsewhere.

Going to guitar center tonight to demo hopefully the pod2, podxt and the v-amp2.

The J-station is probably out because to me, it's out pf production and i would have to get one used - if any thing goes wrong with it, i'm basically screwed.

i'll keep you all updated.....

And as always - a big THANKS to everyone here for their time and effort to help me on this........

Re: Amp modeler choice (again)?

if those three are your only options i´d go for the Pod V2 its freaking amazing, even thou the XT beats it, there is no comparisson, but you can easily find a Boss Gt-x multieffect used for the same price. but the pod gets the lead...

Re: Amp modeler choice (again)?

Hi again -

Just got back from guitar center and tried out the v-amp2 and line 6 podxT (they didn't have the pod 2.0).
I didn't like the v-amp2 though it did sound better than the zoom g2 which i tried earlier today. The podxT was pretty damn good, especially the sol 100. The price however was not...anyway, going to see if i can try out a pod v2. Seems like the way to go for so far..........
The salesperson also mentioned the vox tonelab but again, it too is $300 like the podxT - a bit out of my range.

One a side note- i tried a fender mim strat which i also want to get next----damn gas and no money!!!!

Hi -
I also saw a older digitech genesis 3...weren't they supposed to be the pod's main competitor back in the day?

I don't want to ride you on this...I know you have a budget and you're looking for something within it for your purchase.

But don't feel you HAVE to buy something NOW if it doesn't totally trip your trigger. For the price difference between the PODxt and the POD v2 and some of the other modelers, that's not all that much and if you can delay the purchase and save up a little more for it.

I'm just saying, don't be so hung up on price and make sure you get what YOU want and like and NOT compromise just because it's a little more than you have in your wallet right now.

Yeah, that was all V-Amp 2. I guess he has changed over to a POD, but he cut all of those tracks with his V-Amp 2.

Sorry, you didn't care for the V-Amp 2. Did you try the V-Amp Pro? I don't think there is any difference in the sound, not sure, but it is a much nicer product.

I would like to add a POD to the lineup as well...or maybe an old J-Station. I am not partial, I like them all. However, I have had alot of luck with my V-Amp.

Good luck,

Mike

Hi Mike -

I really wanted to like the vamp2.....couldv'e been the floor model i was using and the amp i was playing thru but it sounded very thin and harsh. They didn't have a vamp pro on hand.

I really liked the SLO 100 on the podxT - any idea how it compares with the pod v2 version? While the podxt is 'hooked up', i don't need all the bells and whistles it comes with. Would settle with the pod v2 if the SLO 100 are similar if not exact.

As for now, I'm looking at:
Pod v2
J-station / Digitech Genesis 3 ---> should be similar i believe (in price too).
(V-amp2 --> might give it another try)

Re: Amp modeler choice (again)?

I don't know, man...the Modern High Gain model in the V-Amp is a Soldano model and I have always found it to be HUGE. Perhaps you didn't tweak the V-Amp enough? When I evacuated for Katrina I was hanging out with this total death metal dude. I had my V-Amp Pro with me and we hooked it up through some little powered PC speakers. He went ballistic for the Modern High Gain model and was cranking out the Death Metal non stop with it!!! He promptly went out and bought himself one.

You need to try it with various cabinet models to get the tone you like. Also, you can double the gain on the V-Amp 2/Pro if you want, there is a mode for increasing the gain. You need to push #2 when in edit mode. You can choose 0, for regular gain, or 1 for double gain. I find the Modern High Gain sounds best through cabinets #10 (custom 2x12) #15, 4x12 and #12, vintage 4x12. It definitely needs some minor tweaking to find your desired tone. However, it has a killer Soldano sound, if you ask me.

I can't tell you the difference between the Soldano Model on the POD2 and the XT...I have only heard it on the POD2.

Hi Mike -
Thanks for the input. I really think (hope) it was the fact that i didn't tweak it enough. I had only like 20 minutes before the store closed when i went so i did everything quickly and haphazardly. I really want to like the vamp2 - the price is nice, i like the lights to let you know what the current settings are (i belive this and podxt are the only ones that have this feature), and the included footswitch.

How does the soldano sound on the pod2 vs that on the vamp2?

thanks again,

jeff

I think the V-Amp 2/Pro has the best sounding distortion tones. Of course, I have not spent that much time with the Pod 2. Many people, however, favor the V-Amp for distortion tones...with the POD being superior for clean tones.

They all, more or less, do similar things. Quality wise, the Line 6 stuff is superior to Behringer. But, Behringer is the price leader for sure.

Re: Amp modeler choice (again)?

Hi all -

I think I'm going to pull the trigger tomorrow on either a johnson j-station (on ebay) or a line 6 pod v2. They are both in my price range and seem to have everything i need/want.
Whatever i do decide/get - i'll let you all know.

Thanks again to everyone........
and always, the people on this forum kick major *** in terms of their knowledge and support.,.....

One of the major things I found, and this is kind of elementary, but the V-Amp2 does NOT have a ground to it.

I was using one to record on a dodgy setup one time and it sounded like I had a chainsaw running in the background.

A few weeks later I brought my V-Amp Pro by with the ground and it was as quiet as could be.

Just something to note for all of you that might live in apartments with slightly less than "up to code" wiring!
