Amp Mods

I'm thinking about modding my bandmaster....just dont know where do get it done...I'm not exactly sure what I want, but I want the amp to overdrive more..kind of a marshal type thing. Any ideas?

Re: Amp Mods

Why not sell it and get an amp that has the tone you want? If the mod involves adding gain stages ("overdrive more" = more gain stages), the mod is likely to cost you more out of pocket than simply replacing the amp.

Re: Amp Mods

Aleclee has a good point. However, I would recommend Voodoo Amps for mod work as that's where I got the Soldano tweaked and I'm extremely happy with it. Good word of mouth on this forum regard Splawn mods, as well as work done by Jeff Seal.

Re: Amp Mods

I would recommend sending it to my brother Bruce at Mission Amps. www.missionamps.com

In order to get a more overdriven tone from a Bandmaster we've done several things:

1. replace the stock .1 and .047 tone control caps with the Marshall plexi value of two .02 caps. This will give you more bass and more mids and a pluckier more pronounced midrange.

2. double or triple the size of the negative feedback resistor so you'll have alot less negative feedback. This will loosen up the amp and add prescence as well as a fuller, deeper, looser tone.

3. the cap on the input to the phase invertor tube can be made bigger to allow more mids and lows to pass through it. If it's .001 it could be made .01 or .02 for a ballsier tone.

4. the input resisitors can be changed from a pair of 68K resistors to apair of 33K resistors and the grid load resistor doubled from a 1 meg to a 2 meg resistor. This give you a little more break up too.

There are other things that can be done too that are reversable mods and each amp is usually tweaked by ear until it sounds "right".

One problem with Bandmasters is that they lack reverb. They're like having two normal channels. The vibrato/reverb channel on a blackface or silverface amp adds another stage of gain and so those amps with reverb generally have a ballsier tone than those without reverb.

Re: Amp Mods

most good techs worth their salt can mod Fender heads

the mods themselves shouldn't be really expensive, but the shipping has to be figured in to the total cost, too

I'm very happy to hear you are enjoying your tone my friend. It was great to have you down to the shop and you are more than welcome any time you want to stop and hang out :)

Both Jeff and Scott are *great* guys and we all get along great. They are both very good techs and I would recommend them to anyone and have numerous times.

Have a great weekend!

Re: Amp Mods

Ditto for the Splawn shout out... man that guy does some great, work. I can''t believe how good my amp sounds.

Re: Amp Mods

Yea..I maybe would consider selling it, but i just like the mojo of it so much better...
I'll look into Jeff Seal, vodoo, splawn and mission, and see what i like best...It will be awhile though cause I just bought some new gear..

Re: Amp Mods

I didn't want to post anything about this until it was official, but Scott Splawn gave me an endorsement deal and it was offical yesterday. My band has an endorsement with guitar center. I can get anything they carry for dealer cost. Mesa, Marshall, Bogner, Fender, Peavey,, and I had to turn them all down to stick with Splawn. Thats how good I think his stuff is seriously. You should check his amps out.

Mods are one thing, but IMO, I think Scott Splawn just makes a better sounding amp than any of the above.

Re: Amp Mods

Trace, welcome to the board. Glad to have another great amp guy around.

I heard a Splawn today at the Houston Amp fest. I thought it was pretty good. I also heard a Marshall modded by Kevin OConnor out of Canada way (the tube amp book guy) and it was a killer just as the Marshalls that Jeff modded. Really hard to go wrong with any of these guys.
