Amp problems??

Ok, I have a custom strat and an SG with new pickups in. Before i replaced the pickups on them i noticed my amp was starting to sound awful (it is an AVT-50, Marshall.) Is this because that particular amp can't handle the high output pickups and the gain/metally sound i am trying to get?? Or is the speaker broken or what?

How long you had that amp?? could be the Pre amp tube gone bad...
