amp questions?

i have the opertunity to get a mosvalve poweramp that is 80 watts stereo (40 per channel) for about 150 brand new, and i have been looking into getting a new amp as it is to replace my crate, but i dont know of any really good, inexpensive preamps, so that leaves me with a problem, as i have wanted to make my own amp housing and put my power/pre combo into a 2x12 cab thus making my own combo, now i have been suggested by several people to get a tech 21 PSA-1 preamp, would this be a good choice for an all around versitile preamp combined with my mosvalve? i play progressive/power metal so i do need some high gain as it is, thanks guys.

Re: amp questions?

Just my opinion, but I think you'll end up with a really processed and somewhat sterile tone (that I would tire of) if you go the route you're thinking. Separate preamps and solid state power amps were big in the 80's but not to many people still use that set up. I'd rethink my plans if it was me and find an affordable tube amp...even something like a Sovtek Mig 50. And get some nice speakers and a Boss DS-1 or some kind of overdrive pedal or multi effects processer you feel good about. You wouldn't have to buy everything at once. Start with a nice head and speakers and add from there. Lew
