Amp Search

gah alright I've been posting amp threads for some time, and the thing is I can't seem to find THE amp for me. I'm gonna tell you my barebones requirements and then you tell me the amp and I'll try it, no matter what you suggest.

I want something that will give me a Pearl Jam tone, classic rock, and grunge.

Requirements:
50W Tube
Under $1500 used or new, if its a head limit it to $1200 so I can buy an avatar cab.
Head or Combo, if combo I'm talking like a 4x10 or 2x12.
2 Channel, if only one tell me what distortion box would get me there.
Reverb would be a bonus.

Classic rock- Jcm 800, Marshall plexi 1987x, Fender Bassman head, Fender Super Reverb (silverfac or blackface), peavey classic, Mesa fs-50 (not sure). All work great with a good overdrive pedal. Ts9, SD-1, DS-1, blues driver, Clean boost....
I don't know much about Mesa but all the others are 1 channel. Best clean sound will be the Fender, the Plexi can get very nice cleans but to get power tube saturation you'll need an attenuator

Higher in price: (But can be had for around 1K)
Rivera Suprema 55, Rivera Fandango, Rivera Knucklehead Reverb

You can look into Voodooamps.com into the Hex or the witchdoctor amps. There are some people selling the pre-production ones. JCMs 800 converted to Hex or witchdoctors for $800. They can do the classic rock, clean, and heavy stuff......

Bogner Shiva, is agreat amp. I've seen them on Harmony Central for $1200 with reverb and EL34s
Bad Cat Hot cat (it's a 30watter but very loud. Very nice clean)

Of what you showed me, the bogner shiva interests me and I'm looking at trying out a 1987x. The Rivera's I would like to check out.

I'm probably shooting for a EL34 amp, so that'll rule out the Fenders. As great and sparkly their cleans are, I want a little grit on my clean. JCM800's are pretty much a dirty amp, but I'm curious about these mods you mentioned. Think I could pick own up for like $500?

Rivera Suprema 55 is an EL34 amp, so as the Fandango. The Suprema is a closed back so it will have a more punchy low end.

The Shiva is a very good amp you can't go wrong with it. Although it is not a high gain amp.

The voodoo line, you could or could not find it for $500. Since Voodoo is now running postproduction amps with their own cab and own design the pre-production has increased price somewhat. There are quite a few people after them now...So it is hard to tell if you can get one for that price. There was one selling on the trading post forum, but it sold already. Look into Harmony Central ads. Also there are lots of clips of it at voodooamps.com....

I'm not gonna try to go for PJs rig because those are mostly like 3 amps, each amp doing what they do best. As far as an Ecstasy, I don't think it'd fit the budget, a DSL would be interesting tho.

The XTC 101b is a great amp indeed, but it is way out of his budget......

Well for 500 I meant an 800 to be modded. The Shiva's what are the chances of them being under 1500? Something makes me think that'll be a stretch.

You can get a JCM moded but not for a hex or a witchdoctor as they don't do that anymore.

Yes you can get a used Shiva for around $1200 with reverb, you just have to look. Last week there was one on HC for $1250 or $1350 with reverb and EL34........Have you tried the Shiva before?

Re: Amp Search

Another vote for the Shiva! It's an amazing amp, and can be had in your price-range. I have one, and I can imagine needing much more gain than it provides.

Re: Amp Search

A secondhand fender bassman reissue with a decent od (fulltone, G2D, Maxon, Keeley etc) and a reverb pedal is a great setup for not much money.

Re: Amp Search

Jeff Seal Modded JCM 800 2205, 4210, 4212 and you'll be in heaven for under a grand amp+ mods.

Sorry 'bout that. I wasn't thinking about price when I mentioned it.
