Hey really quick question. What are the settings on your muff and amp? Have you tried turning the muff's overall volume down and seeing if it sounds less garbled? I have a hypothesis that the muff is boosting the crunched sound in addition to the effect itself, overkilling it. The volume shouldn't drop when you turn the pedal's volume down I think.
The reason I say this is because I was using my weaker practice amp and my new swollen pickle and the same thing happened when I ran the amp louder than it should and then added the fuzz at a normal volume and the same thing you're going through happened. Then I rolled back my amp volume a bit and turned the volume on the pickle down much lower and it just got the clearer fuzz with no volume drop.
