For me it was easier to spend the thirty for a stand that was secure and intended for it's use and actually adjustable than have to scrounge for a milk crate or chair before every gig. Looked more professional too.
A buddy of mine carries his gear in milk crates, so it made sense for him to go with that, but he also lacked the ability to really vary the height or tilt the amp securely if he needed to.
I'm not a big fan of carrying gear in milk crates as I've seen it be a great vehicle for someone to just pick it up and walk off with it and no one really notices.
Perosnally, I wouldn't gig a smaller amp without one.
This question is probably better suited to the Amplifier Central forum though rather than on the Trading Post. If you decide that indeed, you want one, but are looking for it at a cheaper price and don't mind used, the Trading Post's where you're going to want to post.
