Amp Suggestions? Indecisive...

Re: Amp Suggestions? Indecisive...

Spend the extra for the Tweaker 15, or buy a used one. It's a great little Swiss-Army amplifier.

Definitely leaning that way. More expensive, but it does have the sort of sound I'm looking for.

Anyone know what the VHT sounds like? One person here recommended that and the reviews are good.

Lots of video reviews on either. Owners of the Special 6 say it sounds a lot like a Fender Blackface. No direct outs, but does have fx loop and high/low input switch to get a little more drive on high setting. Combo is great price now though.

Re: Amp Suggestions? Indecisive...

Check out the Bad Cat Cougar 5, but there are tons of options for great used amps in your price range

Re: Amp Suggestions? Indecisive...

Just a side note, the 4w VOX would be a freaking amazing amp if it was just a head, the stupid little speaker in the combo really doesn't do it justice, run it through a 1X12 & you'd be surprised how great they are!!! I just bought a new valve amp & I was considering many of the same amplifiers as you? Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the Egnater is the best & most versatile of all your choices. Peavy amps either completely suck or they are awesome, there's no in between, & if you want one of the awesome ones your looking @ a price tag with a comma in it? So I'd stay away from them unless you can try it before you buy it? I haven't tried the 20W but I have used its big brother and I wasn't impressed? I settled on the 40W Egnater Tweaker, there's a lot of very cool options, especially the whole USA/Marshall/VOX switch! The Fender type cleans & VOX type O.D. was what really sold it to me...

Re: Amp Suggestions? Indecisive...

Can you not just turn down the gain on the HT-5? I have a couple of those amps, and I take both of them with me when I go jam with some friends. When I jam with them all we do is play classic rock stuff like Skynyrd, Bad Company, Creedence, The Cars, Zep, James Gang etc.... Everybody that hears and play through mine tell me that they love them, and are blown away by them being only 5 watts as well as not "officially" being a "true" tube amp. Around here they can be had rather cheap on Craigslist.

Yeah that one is probably one of my top choices right now, along with the Egnater and AC10 (going on pure faith with that one).

Re: Amp Suggestions? Indecisive...

As always, I will go ahead and suggest Bugera. I have the V22 and I absolutely LOVE it. If you are looking for lower wattage, the v5 looks really cool, it is really high up on the list of amps I want to buy, along with the new ones they should be releasing soon. Don't listen to all the Bugera hate that gets spread around, my v22 head seems very solid, at least as solid as any other Chinese made amps.

As long as it suits my needs I'm not really picky about brand, although I am really hesitant about an 8" speaker on the V5.

EDIT: does anyone have experience with the Laney Cub they can share? I keep seeing that pop up online.

I've played through the Laney Cub. Not much gain on it in my opinion. The EQ is fairly responsive though. I've always thought of Laney when someone mentions classic or vintage style rock. I'd definately recommend giving it a try before you buy one though.

Won't have much luck there, unfortunately. None of the stores in my area carry Laney amps. I'm going on mostly speculation here...

Man, sometimes I hate threads like these. I just followed my own advice. I couldn't resist it when I saw it on ebay. I just bought a Mahaffay HiLo Watt Plexi head.

:D

ah that's too bad. But honestly I think you'd like the Laney as long as you're not looking to get a high gain sound outta it. It does have pretty good tone

Cool, thanks for the input. I don't need high gain at all, so it definitely sounds like a good choice. I may weigh the Cub against the new AC10.
