Amp Suggestions

I am interested in getting a combo in the price range of up to $1000. It doesn't have to be super powerful as I don't play out often anymore. I will be using it for jamming and practice. I play mostly heavy instrumental rock with a lot gain. I would like something with a good low end and a tight sound when using lots of saturation that also works well when playing leads. Tube is preferable, although I would not mind a really good solid state. No Line 6 please. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Peavey JSX combo. I love mine. Check out the vids to hear the tone....

Re: Amp Suggestions

i'll have to agree on the JSX, my buddy owns the head version and it kicks major a$$, can never go wrong with a JCM 800 combo amp either tho, and they can be had for under $1G i'm sure

Laney LC30! All tube, plenty of gain, fantastic cleans & loud as hell! With a price well below your budget it will blow away many amps in that range. Great for practice, recording and live shows. A pretty small form factor for that kind of amp and kinda lightweight for toting around.

As a bonus it's got some nice features and a great reverb. You won't be disappointed w one!

Re: Amp Suggestions

For practice & jams I'd look at something in the 20-40 watt range. 100 is going to be overkill & barely controllable. Then again, some 20 watt amps are barely controllable too... just full on LOUD. Orange & Rivera would be at or near the top of my list... One of the Rockerverb 1x12 or a Clubster.

I have a Peavey 5150 Combo I'm looking to get rid of that has exactly what you're looking for, good tight low end with lots of saturation.

I tried both the Rovera Chubster and Clubster a last week. They are loud and sound great.

Ditto on the orange, I have one and it's great. My only complaint is it's too loud to use all the time where I live. It can be heard loud and clear throughout the entire house on 3. It has decent enough cleans seeing how simple the clean channel is, but the od and distortion is to die for. It can go from moderate breakup for blues all the way to metal just by turning the gain up. It's very sensitive to guitar/pup combinations and will let every nuance of your playing ring out. So if you are sloppy and want to hide behind gain, it's not gonna help you.

Re: Amp Suggestions

Thanks to all for your suggestions... I got such a great deal on a Mesa Solo Rectifier head that I couldn't pass it up. That's a helluva a practice amp. :lmao: Now I have to buy a cabinet for it. I am thinking Marshall.
