Amp switcher?

Anyone know of any good amp switchers? I know a simple A/B/Y box won't do. I want to switch between a Fender Blues Junior and a Weber 5F1 Champ combo, and be able to use both.

Re: Amp switcher?

You could start considering proper switching gear, such as the Switchblade. Given your need to use two amps (assumably in parallel), you'll need something more complex like this. There might be something simpler out there that someone else knows of, though.

Re: Amp switcher?

If you want to use the combos' built-in speakers, an A/B switch can work if you don't get ground loops. You can also avoid ground loops by modifying the cable between the switch and one of the amps to break the signal ground.

If you have your heart set on a high-end amp switcher, Framptone, Lehle and Radial make great units.

Trust me, at about $250 each for amp switchers, I'll take the cheapest route. If you have any other modifications with the cable, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Re: Amp switcher?

Whirlwind also makes a box like that. Its what I run. I can switch between my marshall, mesa or both. They're around $90 ( I think that's what I paid for mine) and I've had two for seperate applications and neither have done anything but work flawlessly no matter what kind of abuse I've thrown their way.

Edit: I just noticed you said a simple A/B/Y box won't work. Why is that? Do you have an array of effects that you want to be able to run through both and manipulate? Because if you just want to switch between the amps the afore mentioned A/B/Y boxes will work.

Actually, I asked someone on another forum, and I was told it wouldn't work due to ground loops and unwanted hum.

I want to have something like this:

and I want to be able to turn the modulations and boost on and off.

I think the whirlwind may work because the 1/4" jack is a In/out.

One of them I use as a 1 into 2 and the other I used as a 2 into 1 for the signal if that makes any sense.

You might check into it but I'm still not sure if its exactly what you want.

Re: Amp switcher?

MORLEY ISNT WORKING FOR ME EITHER
HUM AND BUZZ

I WAS ON THE STARTOUCH SITE - is that an A/B/Y??? It looks like they sell A/B only

Disconnect the ground from one end of one of the cables that goes to the amp. That way, there's no "loop" in the grounds while everything is still properly grounded.

This may be a really dumb question, but why couldn't you build a box with one isolated jack and just leave the ground on that jack hanging when both channels are "on"?

About the simple A/B/Y boxes, I've also been told on the DIYstompboxes forum that you need some active buffering/isolation to avoid ground loops. However, some guys seem to have no problems...

Re: Amp switcher?

There are some aby boxes like the Lehle that have isolated outputs to eliminate the hum. I believe KGMESSIER had the same problem, and I recommended him the Ebtech/Morley Hum Eliminator which fixed the hum/buzz. You basically plug one of your amps power cables into the Hum Eliminator, and the hum/buzz is gone. I've never used one personally but everything I read says it solves the problem.
